AGENESS "Imageness" (1998) Finland, Musea |
Ageness
is a quite good finnish example of symphonic prog band moving along the
same roots of Iluvatar, Jadis and Iq. "Imageness" is their fourth
album bearing up of good melodies, keyboards and organ passages and a
virtuous rhythmic section ( especially the bassist Jarri Ukkonen). |

FOLQUE "Vardoger" (1977) Norway, Pan records |
Among the hundreads of folk bands around the world nobody declared so clearly its music style. This band from Norway, simply called Folque, started to make music in early seventies and "Vardoger" has been released in 1977. Of course music takes inspiration by traditional norwegian tunes, played using mandolins, violins together with the more conventional guitars, keys, bass and drums. The lyrics in mother tongue are sung by Lisa Helljesen. It's not an unforgettable album (sometimes a little boring) but it certainly deserves to be heard to find folk music of nothern Europe at its first steps. |

HEON " Electro-Acoustic Requiem" (2003) Canada, Unicorn |
Martin
Heon is a canadian guitar-player and (I'm sure) very close to applied
technology. His debut album "Electro-acoustic requiem" has been
recorded using electric guitar only. The six chords sound has been distorted,
filtered and probably also genetically modified. Sometimes it seems to
hear completely different instruments, so it's certainly an interesting
and ambitious experiment, but it's also very difficult to rate for me.
When Martin creates soft and ambient melodies I can love his job, much
less when he's intricate, convulse and hard to swallow. |

METALLICA " St. Anger" (2003) Usa , Vertigo |
I
think Metallica wanted to start again from their first steps, leaving
behind them the more and more accessible hard rock they recently played
in their last works. This is the only explanation. Nevertheless "St.
Anger" can't be compared to "Kill 'Em All" or "Ride
The Lightning": there's the same aggressivity and roughness but on
the edge (often overtaken) of the worst industrial metal. The arrangments
are not intentionally so cured and Lars Ulrich drumming seems like an
assembly line. Besides, please forget James Hetfield singing "The
Unforgiven"; now he sings just like a working class man who probably
won't receive enough money for his retired time. |

MORIA FALLS "The Long Goodbye" (1995) UK , Verulamium |
Moria
Falls is a five-piece coming from England. "The Long Goodbye"
is the first album, released in 1995, moving along a melodic neo-progressive
rock in the vein of Pendragon and early Marillion.
David White and his keyboards are everywhere but I mostly like the guitar
themes played by Glen Sanderman who I supposed to be the leading guide
of Moria Falls. Finally I don't think Miff is a good singer. |

MYSTERE DE NOTRE DAME "s/t" (1996) Italy , WMMS |
This debut cd of Mystere De Notre Dame (from Italy not France) was released in 1996 and mixes classic and melodic prog-metal (a-la Dream Theater) with the stronger heavy metal sound. The sound quality is absolutely excellent, the guitar playing is clean and skilled and the singer could be the Geoff Tate' s youngest brother or the James Hetfield's cousin. Nevertheless there are too much cliches and most of the songs lack of creativity. I only liked "Out Of The Row", a really inspired song. The best and good intentions are not enough, I'm sorry guys ! |

ROZ VITALIS "Painsadist" (2003) Russia, Independent |
Roz
Vitalis comes from Russia and "Painsadist" is their second album
after "L'ascensione" of the last year. In this Ep you can basicly
find 37 minutes of electronic music ruled by Ivan Rozmainsky's keyboards,
programming and several sound effects. Some of the seven tracks are more
relaxed and supported by fine atmospheres, while others are more dissonant
and convulse. I don't like this kind of music very much but I must admit
to have enjoyed especially the second half of this work (see "Exodus"
and the final title-track). |

JOE SATRIANI "Strange Beautiful Music" (2002) Usa, Sony music |
Everybody
knows Joe Satriani's skillness while playing the 6-chords, so I won't
lose my time telling you this. Joe was and currently is one of the best
melody maker living on earth: he can take out from his guitar rhytmical
and lovely tunes full of wonderful arrangments. |

DOMENICO SOLAZZO "Carpigstroke" (2003) Belgium, Independent |
I
Know quite well the musical tastes of Domenico Solazzo (a belgian guy
with clear italian origin), so I wasn't surprised of the artistic content
of his debut album called "Carpigstroke". It's enigmatic, disquieting,
minimalistic and so unusual. Unfortunately the recording is not enough
good to consider it something more than a first experiment. I met the
best moments when Domenico tried a more "classical" and athmospheric
approach as in the ummagammian "Protect", "Collect"
and "Neglet". I liked it much less when he gives a clearer shape
and substance to some tracks as "Affect" for example. |

VOX TEMPUS "Demo" (2004) U.S.A. , Independent |
Vox
Tempus was born from the ashes of Equinox: Eric Ragno (he also played
for Takara) on keys, Dan Reed (also in Millenium) on
vocals, Ray Mantor on guitars, Jim Turba on bass and Greg Bissonette on
drums as special (very special) guest. The five americans give us a quite
good hors-d'oeuvre of their forthcoming debut album: the three songs show
us a really melodic progressive metal, never too complex, except "What
About" more in the vein of early Dream Theater.
Overall the rhythm section is quite strong always riched with good keyboards
carpets. Dan Reed's vocal performance is absolutely incredible. |

WHEATSTONE BRIDGE "Demo" (2003) U.S.A., Independent |
Wheatstone Bridge is a band from U.s.a., born in 2002 thanks to the drummer Ernie Plank and the guitarist David Wilson. Then John Taylor (bass, vocals) joined the band. With this 21 minutes demo they offer us a blend of so different styles: the foreground is ruled by a so heavy and doom guitar in the vein of early Black Sabbath but the architecture which the band builds the songs with is more complex and unforeseeable. There are some beautiful traces of hard-prog (from the seventies) and jazz-fusion. Three songs only are not enough to give a definitive rating to this demo ("Application I" is my favourite) but I certainly found a band in search of an interesting and so original style. Let's wait for the whole album… |
