- Questo debutto degli
americani Vox Tempus era stato preceduto qualche mese fa dalla distribuzione
di un demo dimostrativo contenente tre brani. Le anticipazioni del demo
vengono confermate dal full-lenght "In The Eye Of Time" che può
essere definito come il più classico esempio di progressive-metal
melodico contenente tutti gli ingredienti indispensabili e nel giusto dosaggio
per un prodotto di questo tipo. La chitarra di Ray Mantor sforna riff talvolta
granitici, altre volte più rockeggianti alla George Lynch; la batteria
del superospite Greg Bissonette è esente da sbavature e le tastiere
di Eric Ragno, leader del gruppo e valente musicista già apprezzato
nei Takara di Jeff Scott Soto, sono imponenti e precise. Naturalmente non
poteva mancare una voce, quella di Dan Reed, potente, dotatissima e dall'acuto
facile.
In realtà questo è un disco a due facce, quella tutt'altro
che disprezzabile (ma un po' discontinua) dei contenuti e quella un po'
troppo standardizzata (e quindi prevedibile) della forma musicale. Buona
l'apertura di "For Every Life" cosi come il riff dokkeniano che
apre "Escape" ma Il disco comincia realmente a piacermi solo da
"Foreshadows" (la quarta traccia) in poi con l'unica eccezione
rappresentata dell'inconsistente "What About". Bellissima "Voice
Of Time" anche se il mio brano preferito è senza dubbio "Love,
Lies And Treason", tredici minuti abbondanti di melodia, cambi di ritmo,
a metà strada tra Rush, Queensryche e Dream Theater. A mio parere,
un brano da incorniciare.
Il mio giudizio complessivo del lavoro, che strappa una sufficienza striminzita
grazie ad episodi isolati, è sicuramente viziato dal mio rapporto
non certo idilliaco con questo genere musicale. Tuttavia sono convinto che
"In The Eye Of Time" saprà catturare consensi ben più
grandi dal grande appassionato di progressive-metal melodico.
- The Vox Tempus debut
album called "In The Eye Of Time" had been preceded by a three-tracks
demo few months ago. So the VT music style is not a great new for me: the
band plays a classic melodic progressive metal wih all the necessary ingredients
for a product like this. The Ray Mantor's guitar is sometimes hard-edged,
sometimes simply rocking a-la George Lynch; then there's a famous guest
sitting behind the drums, Greg Bissonette; an album like this couldn't lack
of a wonderful and powerful voice and Dan Reed has it. Finally the leader,
the keyboard man, Eric Ragno.
Well, I think this is a double-faced album: most of the compositions are
clevered built around good ideas and fine melodies but the shape is not
as good. Unfortunately Vox Tempus plays a quite predictable and mass-produced
music. "For Every Life" is a good opening and also the following
"Escape" (with a so inspired dokkenesque guitar riff) is not less.
However, the album really starts growing up inside of me from the fourth
track "Foreshadows" on, with the only exception of the groundless
"What About". "Voice Of Time" is a great song but "Love,
Lies And Treason" is even better: thirteen minutes of pure melody and
several changes of mood, an enjoyable crossing between Rush, Queensryche
and Dream Theater at their best.
Overall, my final rating suffers from a personal lack of deep interest for
this kind of music, but I'm sure that "In The Eye Of Time" will
catch wide consents among the progressive metal fans.
