- Gli olandesi Us giungono
con "The Young And Restless" alla loro quarta fatica discografica,
la quarta tappa di una carriera iniziata ufficialmente già negli
anni settanta benché discograficamente solo nel 2002. Dopo l'ottimo
ed, a mio parere, sottovalutato "Eamon's Day", uscito nel 2003,
gli ultimi tre anni sono stati particolarmente travagliati per i fratelli
Wernars: prima l'incidente "informatico" che ha penalizzato la
resa sonora di "The Ghost Of Human Kindness" e poi la notizia
appresa solo alla vigilia dell'ascolto sfogliando i crediti dell'ultimo
album, che il cantante Stephen Christiaans non fa più parte del gruppo.
Una delusione profonda, considerando l'ottima opinione che mi ero fatto
sulle sue capacità vocali ed accentuata poi dalla consapevolezza
che il suo sostituto non si sia rivelato all'altezza.
Insomma, le premesse di quello che poteva e doveva essere il disco del riscatto
non sono state molto incoraggianti. Ma entriamo nei dettagli: nessun cambiamento
evidente dal punto di vista stilistico, perché anche qui emerge il
background musicale dei Wernars, fatto di amore incondizionato per il progressivo
sinfonico inglese, Genesis e Yes in primis.
Al contrario, dal punto di vista dei contenuti il disco rappresenta, ahimè,
un passo indietro rispetto al precedente: non mancano le buone composizioni
come "The Rainbow's End" e "The Bridge" ma la sensazione
generale è che gli Us abbiano progressivamente smarrito la vena creativa
che aveva illuminato "Eamon's Day".
Va inoltre aggiunto che i buoni spunti che di tanto in tanto fanno capolino
sono purtroppo penalizzati da un suono impastato e poco brillante, dalla
voce scadente di Marijke Wernars e da un drumming pessimo sia dal punto
di vista sonoro che esecutivo. E' dunque un problema anche tecnico, non
solo creativo, quello che condiziona il disco e purtroppo non sono sufficienti
le sempre ottime trame di basso di Wernars a migliorarne le sorti.
Ho ancora in testa le ottime canzoni inserite in "Eamon's Day",
la sua registrazione più che soddisfacente ed il cantato al di sopra
della media e dunque non riesco a capacitarmi di quanto "The Young
And Restless" mi sembri cosi distante. Un riscatto, spero, solo rimandato
alla prossima volta.

"The Ghost Of Human Kindness" that was the unaware victim of a
computer crash. Mmmh, I think the riscatto must be delayed to the next US
album.
The Wernars background is well known and it didn't change: their deep love
for symphonic progressive rock (in the vein of Genesis and Yes) still rules
the game. Besides the album also features some well done songs like "The
Rainbow's End", "The Bridge" and few others.
Well, what are the problems of "Tyatr"? More or less half of the
songs are not so inspired, then the overall poor sound quality damages the
other half ; drumming provided by Joris Ten Eussens is another weak point,
both from the technical and sound point of view. Finally the singing: I
didn't know before listening to the album and I found that the singer (and
what a singer !) Stephan Christiaans had previously left the band, replaced
by another Wernars relative, Marijke. Well, unfortunately the new singer
is not at the same level.
The pass-mark rating I'm giving to "The Young And The Restless"
is due to the usual pleasant and inspired bass playing by Jos Wernars, but
I can't understand why the mighty and impressive "Eamon's Day"
(one of my favourite 2003's albums !!!) never had a worthy follower. Maybe
next time.
