- Con il nuovo
disco (il terzo della loro carriera), gli olandesi Us hanno scelto la strada
della continuità stilistica, magari poco coraggiosa, ma benaugurante
per chi ha apprezzato il loro lavoro precedente "Eamon's Day".
"The Ghost Of Human Kindness" è composto da cinque tracce,
alcune molto lunghe ed articolate, che ripropongono un rock sinfonico dalle
tonalità prevalentemente acustiche ed abbastanza accessibili. Il
copioso utilizzo della chitarra acustica è una loro caratteristica
molto personale che rende la musica degli Us quantomeno riconoscibile tra
le molte proposte di questo genere che in Olanda sembra trovare largo spazio
e consensi.
Gli Us si sono sempre dimostrati molto abili proprio nel creare suite lunghe
ed elaborate ma sempre molto fluide, tutt'altro che pesanti o troppo pretenziose.
Ancora una volta si respira quel dolce profumo di Genesis, Yes ed in generale
del prog sinfonico inglese anni settanta.
E' però sufficiente ascoltare i primi minuti del cd per notare che
qualcosa in sede di incisione deve essere andato storto: i primi tre brani
sembrano estratti da dischi diversi ed incisi con budget veramente irrisori.
La voce va spesso in distorsione ed il suono non respira e sembra ovattato.
Leggendo le note del booklet, scopro che effettivamente i 4/5 delle registrazioni
erano andate perdute per colpa di un hard disk capriccioso e poi parzialmente
recuperate.
Peccato, perche la prima parte del lavoro ("Full Circle" e "Domes"
per un totale di 34 minuti) è proprio quella più ispirata
e convincente e sono certo che con una maggiore resa sonora avrebbe fatto
figura ancora migliore. In questi due brani troviamo l'essenza della musica
degli Us, ossia un crescendo sonoro che parte da atmosfere acustiche che
poi si intensificano in un suono più pomposo e sinfonico, reso ancor
più interessante dal basso di Jos Wernars in grande evidenza e dall'ottima
voce di Stephan Christiaans. In sintesi due brani da incorniciare anche
dal punto di vista lirico.
Purtroppo già con "Grand Canyon" comincia la fase calante
del lavoro: questa è una ballata acustica che non convince affatto
nella struttura, nel ritornello troppo dolciastro ed in generale nelle parti
vocali.
Poi l'album riprende leggermente quota con il romanticismo neo-prog di "The
Dream" e si conclude con l'altra suite omonima, che tuttavia non riesce
ad eguagliare la bellezza cristallina di "Full Circle".
Qualità sonora a parte, "The Ghost Of Human Kindness" raggiunge
livelli di gradimento più che buoni ma manca di continuità
e quindi si ferma su un gradino più basso rispetto allo splendido
"Eamon's Day".
- "The Ghost Of
Human Kindness" is the third album by this dutch band simply called
Us. The band chose the easiest way of a clear stylistic continuity which
is maybe the braveless but the best way for everybody who deeply loved their
previous album "Eamon's Day". I'm personally one of the lovers
of that album.
The new album is built again around five tracks, some really long lasting
and elaborate, showing an acoustic symphonic rock very well written and
played. I think the wide use of acoustic guitar is just their personal way
to play symphonic prog and it's enough to be recognized among the so thick
dutch sympho-prog scene.
They are true masters by creating long and mellow suites plenty of different
moods, absolutely not hard to swallow or too pretentious. Once again you
can breathe the sweet perfume of Yes and Genesis and overall the art-rock
from the seventies.
The first two tracks ("Full Circle" and "Domes") are
34 minutes of almost perfect music which I consider the true essence of
Us sound: they start with a mellow acoustic atmosphere and then the sound
fills of keys textures and pulsing bass. Besides Stephan Christiaans voice
is impressive as always.
Unfortunately something went wrong in the recording process: the band experienced
an hardisk breakdown, so they were compelled to recover most of the tracks.
The result is an overall not so brilliant sound.
The less inspired part of the album starts with "Grand Canyon",
a quite good acoustic ballad, followed by the better new progressive of
"The Dream". Unfortunately also the eponymous final suite can't
equalize the beauty of "Full Circle".
Apart from the sound quality, "The Ghost Of Human Kindness" reaches
a good level but if you want to find Us music at his best I recommend to
start with the previous album "Eamon's Day".
