- Strana storia quella
degli Us: questa band olandese esiste addirittura dal 1975 (in verità
allora si facevano chiamare Saga !!) come cover band specializzata nel rifacimento
di pezzi di Eagles, Peter Frampton e Moody Blues. Un'esistenza travagliata,
comunque, che si spegne nel 1983 e rinasce solo ben 15 anni dopo, nel 1998,
allorquando Jos ed Ernest Wernars insieme al batterista Paul Van Velzen
decidono di riprendere l'attività dando alla luce un cd autoprodotto
"The Wizzard Of Us". Nel 2003 pubblicano questo "Eamon's
Day" che mi accingo a presentarvi.
Il lavoro si compone di cinque brani soltanto che però superano quasi
tutti i 10 minuti: ciascuno di essi è impregnato di sonorità
romantico-progressive che ci riportano alla memoria le gesta passate di
gente come Genesis, Marillion e Yes. In verità gli Us hanno saputo
creare un'amalgama molto ben equilibrata di progressive romantico e sinfonico
anni 70, solo parzialmente riadattato ai tempi moderni oltreché (particolare
non irrilevante) concepito ed eseguito magistralmente. Jos Werners ha scritto
praticamente tutto il materiale e quindi monopolizza anche l'esecuzione
dei brani: il suono del suo basso si trova sempre in primo piano e sono
molto frequenti anche i suoi interventi di chitarra acustica.
Superlative sono a mio parere l'iniziale "Eamon's Day" contraddistinta
proprio da una ritmica solida di basso e dalle tastiere di Ernest che consentono
al brano di raggiungere vette di alto sinfonismo.
"Sea Song" si mantiene sulla stessa lunghezza d'onda ma è
ancor più varia ed efficace. Frizzante e dinamica nella prima parte
grazie ai continui intrecci di chitarra acustica, aperture tastieristiche
di grande respiro e, consentitemi di sottolinearlo, una performance vocale
dell'ultimo arrivato Stephan Christiaans (a metà strada tra Fish
e Peter Gabriel) di notevole livello. Poi un intermezzo strumentale rilassato
ed il gran finale in crescendo. Solo "The Tunnel" si trova al
di sotto della media del disco che si chiude con la suite finale "Life
In Progress" della durata di ben ventisette minuti, sulla falsariga
di "Sea Song" ma più lunga e dilatata. Ottima veramente.
"US" è un nome semplice, molto breve e quindi facilissimo
da tenere a mente. Io vi consiglio di farlo, così come, molto caldamente,
vi invito ad ascoltare "Eamon's Day", che si è inserito
(ormai a giochi quasi fatti) nella mia top ten del 2003. I neo-prog fans
sono avvisati …

existing even since 1975 under a different name (Saga) as a cover band of
Eagles, Peter Frampton and Moody Blues tracks. Then they splitted off in
1983 and rejoined after fifteen years when Jos and Ernest Wernars together
with the drummer Paul Van Velzen released a self produced cd "The Wizzard
Of Us".
This brand new "Eamon's day" contains five tracks only but really
lenghty: each one is impregnated with romantic prog sound in the vein of
Genesis, Marillion and Yes above all. Jos Werners (bass and acoustic guitar)
is the main composer and his touch monopolizes the executions: his bass
guitar and acoustic guitar are both always in the foreground. The title
track has a superlative introduction, going on even better thanks to a solid
bass rhythm and Ernest's keys, reaching so high symphonic peaks. "Sea
Song" begins with a sparkling and dynamic acoustic guitar, then it's
more quiet and relaxed. Here I'm happy to underline an impressive vocal
performance by the new entry Stephan Christiaans (his voice has both something
of Fish and Peter Gabriel). "The Tunnel" is the only track I didn't
like so much. The album ends with the lenghty suite "Life In Progress"
in the same vein of "Sea Song" but more complex and various, with
lots of keys parts. Can I use the word "Wonderful" to describe
it ? Yes I really can.
"Us" is a short and so easy name to keep in mind. Please do it
and listen to "Eamon's Day", my favourite new discovery of 2003.
