- A giudicare dalla musica
che propongono, avremmo potuto scambiare i The Grand Trick per uno di quei
moltissimi e sfortunati gruppi degli anni settanta che dopo aver debuttato
con un disco promettente si erano poi sciolti prestissimo; e quindi questo
"Decadent Session" potrebbe benissimo essere un recupero discografico
dell'attentissima Transubstans records.
Invece questo quintetto svedese proveniente da Linkoping si è formato
nel maggio del 2003, praticamente l'altroieri traendo tuttavia generica
ispirazione da tutto il panorama hard rock anni settanta dei vari Deep Purple,
Ufo, Thin Lizzy ed Uriah Heep, anche se l'elenco potrebbe benissimo continuare.
Chiunque potrebbe dire la sua opinione circa la predominante influenza che
uno dei gruppi citati ha avuto sui The Grand Trick e probabilmente tutti
avrebbero la loro fetta di ragione. A me ricordano soprattutto gli Ufo ed
i Thin Lizzy, forse per la voce di Johan Dahnberg che spesso mi evoca quella
di Phil Mogg ma anche per il chitarrismo di Michael Karlsson e di Stefan
Johansson, accostabile a quello del Michael Schenker d'annata. O forse più
semplicemente perché il mio brano preferito, "Late Morning Daze",
è anche quello di maggiore ispirazione Ufo/Thin Lizzy.
Da segnalare, infine, "Without Anything Within" dove non mancano
alcune puntate sul southern rock d'autore. Persino la registrazione è
volutamente sporca e moderatamente ovattata proprio per dare all'ascoltatore
la sensazione di deja-vu.
Nel complesso il disco è tutt'altro che sorprendente e fa dell'anacronismo
studiato a tavolino il suo unico limite, ma è altresì molto
piacevole da ascoltare ed anche ben eseguito: fa piacere ascoltare un'attenta
e non pacchiana riproposizione della musica con cui più o meno tutti
siamo cresciuti. Bravi.

thought of The Grand Trick as an old hard-rock band from the seventies and
"Decadent Session" could have been one of the several and very
good reissues made by Transubstans records.
On the contrary, this swedish five-piece coming from Linkoping was born
in may 2003, that is the day before yesterday.
The music played by this band takes an overall inspiration by the seventies
hard rock scene featuring Deep Purple, Ufo, Thin Lizzy and Uriah Heep, though
the list could go on.
My favorite comparison is to Ufo/Thin Lizzy, probably due to the Johan Dahnberg's
voice that is very close to the Phill Mogg's one, but also due to the guitar
lines reminding me the earliest Michael Schenker. Certainly this comparison
is strenghtened by the wonderful (and my absolute favourite song) "Late
Morning Daze", deeply influenced by the Ufo/Thin Lizzy school.
Another favourite is "Without Anything Within" where the band
adds some echoes of southern-rock feeling; besides even the recording is
intentionally rough and quite muffled just to give the listener a deja-vu
feeling.
Well, "Decadent Session" is not a surprising album but it offers
a so pleasant listening and really good executions ... and I must say I
always feel good everytime I listen to the music which I grew up with. Good
job.
