- Dietro al progetto
Soniq Theater si cela un validissimo multistrumentista tedesco, Alfred Mueller,
musicista non proprio di primo pelo, scaltro , preparato ma soprattutto
molto ispirato. Il suo curriculum vanta diverse esperienze, la più
conosciuta delle quali è quella come tastierista dei Rachel's Birthday
con i quali nel 1996 diede alle stampe un unico album intitolato "An
Invitation To..".
Scioltasi quella band, nel 2000 Alfred decide di ripartire da zero (si fa
per dire) autoproducendosi "Soniq Theater", "A Second Of
Action" e quest'ultimo "The Third Eye", dove suona tutti
gli strumenti, le tastiere, batteria elettronica (sicuramente campionata),
chitarra e basso campionati ed emulazioni varie. Tutto ciò non può
deporre certo a favore della genuinità del prodotto che effettivamente
in diversi passaggi suona finto ed artificioso.
Devo comunque sottolineare che le evoluzioni strumentali tessute da Alfred
sono assemblate molto bene, con gusto, grande dinamismo, discreta continuità
e perizia tecnica . In buona parte dei brani c'è anche una costante
ricerca del motivo accattivante e del ritmo giusto, del groove che ti prende
e ti fa inconsapevolmente agitare gli arti inferiori. "Skydiver"
per esempio, ottime tastiere prog ma anche ritmo e dinamismo alla Vangelis
che ne farebbero un' ideale colonna sonora per un documentario sulle scoperte
spaziali. "Vamos a Ver", "Inner Vision" sembrano episodi
inconcludenti e superflui (e forse lo sono) ma risultano comunque piacevoli
e ben strutturati.
In definitiva un album di musica elettronica tendente al prog più
che soddisfaciente e dallo spiccato appeal commerciale, sebbene un po' troppo
fine a se stesso e che viene naturale relegare a rango di banco di prova,
di esibizione più per saggiare le capacità creative di un
bravo artista che per esprimere qualcosa di senso compiuto . In tal senso
mi auguro che Alfred decida di mettere a disposizione le buone idee palesate
in questo "The Third Eye", per un progetto più ambizioso
e completo di questo.

project there's a german multintrumentalist, Alfred Mueller, a musician
with many years of experience on his back and a very good inspiration. He
was behind the keys in Rachel's Birthday "An invitation To..",
then in 2000 he decided to start again with this project, recording the
eponymous album (2000), "A Second Of Action" (2002) and this one.
The music moves inside a progressive/electronic style.
Usually it's not a good thing to play all the instruments by using sampled
drums and guitars: as a consequence the album often sounds fake and artificial.
On the other hand all the tracks ("all" underlined) has been arranged
very well, full of positive melodies and dynamic. Few examples only: "Skydiver"
has impressive prog keys and an exciting rhythm, it could be used as a soundtrack
for a documentary about space discoveries. "Vamos a Ver", "Bilbo
Is Back" and "Inner Vision" are other great tunes
My only criticism is that this album sounds like a pure exhibition of songwriting
and good arrangments and, of course, I hope Alfred will be able to put all
this good musical ideas at a more expressive and mature project disposal.
Overall, a very enjoyable electronic music cd often going toward progressive
territories. It has a strongly commercial appeal and can be appreciated
