- Sono pochi gli album
che catturano immediatamente la mia attenzione e che mi trasmettono quel
piacevole senso di euforia, poi solitamente seguita dall'appagamento. Mi
è capitato con questo ottimo disco dei Retroheads, un quintetto norvegese
all'esordio discografico per la canadese Unicorn.
Il fatto che siano all'esordio non significa, come in questo caso, che gli
artisti coinvolti siano alla loro prima esperienza: infatti il gruppo nasce
attorno alla figura di Tore Bo Bendixen, già membro fondatore dei
Fruitcake e successivamente apprezzato produttore televisivo in Norvegia.
Pur non mettendo in dubbio la qualità dei programmi televisivi norvegesi
(che peraltro non conosco), applaudo con favore questo ritorno alla musica
di Tore, spinto dal forte desiderio di recuperare quei suoni e quelle attitudini
del passato, di cui è sempre stato profondo appassionato. "Retrospective"
è un modo eloquente di intitolare il suo ritorno sulla scena ed è
un brillante esempio di rock progressivo sinfonico con copiosa abbondanza
di tastiere, Minimoog e mellotron che amplificano notevolmente la spazialità
e la ridondanza delle linee melodiche. Si rimane quasi rapiti ed incatenati
allo stereo al cospetto dei magniloquenti arrangiamenti e dalle atmosfere
maestose che regala l'album, ma si rimane soprattutto stupefatti dalla continuità
con cui tutti i nove brani sanno offrire spunti melodici generosi. Da un
contesto di tale qualità, mi limito ad estrapolare gli episodi che
meritano la lode, come l'iniziale "Earthsong", "Man",
"Urban Flight Delight" e "Judgement Day", quest'ultima,
accostabile forse ai Solar Project con gli ottimi vocalizzi di Ann-Kristin
Bendixen e l'egregio lavoro di chitarra di Tommy Berre nel finale. Infine,
la mia Camel-dipendenza mi costringe a segnalarvi anche la conclusiva "The
Fool", un brano strumentale nel quale chitarra e tastiere si inseguono
vorticosamente come solo Latimer e Bardens sapevano fare.
Di solito, prima di dare un voto come 90/100, ci penso almeno novanta volte,
ma "Retrospective" è proprio un album che consiglio di
non lasciarsi scappare !!
- I could count with
my fingers all the releases able to catch my interest immediately after
the first taste. "Retrospective" is among them: it's the first
album by the norwegian proggers Retroheads, a five-piece under canadian
Unicorn label.
Although I'm talking about a debut album, most of the Retroheads members
are not at their first experience in music business: for example, who knows
norwegian prog scene have already met Tore Bo Benedixen as founder member
of Fruitcake and then appreciated Tv producer. Well, I haven't any doubts
about the quality of norwegian Tv shows but I'm so happy Tore have decided
to come back to music with this excellent piece of work. "Retrospective"
is the rightest title for an album so close to the sound of seventies, a
brilliant symphonic prog rock album plenty of keys, Minimoog and mellotron
passages. I had been ravished both by the spacey arrangements and majesic
atmospheres coming out from tracks like "Earthsong", "Man",
"Urban Flight Delight" and "Judgement Day"; the last
one features an impressive vocal section by Ann-Kristin Bendixen and an
inspired guitar job by Tommy Berre. Lastly, my deep love for Camel music
leads me to mention the final track "The Fool", an instrumental
song where guitar and keys chase themselves as only Latimer and Bardens
were able to do.
Usually I don't give a 90 out of 100 rating so easily and I think about
it at least ninety times before, but "Retrospective" is an album
that prog fans can't absolutely miss.
