- Lo ammetto: ero ansioso
che uscisse il secondo album dei Retroheads, sia per ribadire quanto mi
fosse piaciuto l'esordio di due anni fa, sia per avere una prima conferma
se annoverare o meno il gruppo norvegese fra i grandi del rock progressivo
attuale.
Beh, una prima, piacevole conferma è giunta sin dal primo ascolto
di "Introspective": il gruppo non ama vivere di rendita ripetendo
una formula già utilizzata. Infatti, se confrontato con il disco
d'esordio, "Introspective" è decisamente meno monodirezionalmente
floydiano ed allarga i suoi orizzonti timbrici nel toccare differenti sottobranchie
del prog anni settanta. I suoni sono comunque sempre moderni ed ottenuti
grazie alle tecnologie correnti. E' anche più complesso ed intricato
nelle trame, benché in alcuni frangenti anche troppo dispersivo e
contemporaneamente si concede più facilmente al neo-prog melodico.
Quest'ultima caratteristica è particolarmente evidente in "Living
In A Bubble" dove la sorprendente somiglianza della voce di Mike Mann
con quella di Damian Wilson mi consente di azzardare (anche musicalmente)
un paragone con i Landmarq dei tempi passati.
Va detto che questi cambiamenti hanno una ragione anche pratica: il gruppo
si è rinnovato con sostituzioni ed aggiunte alla line-up, arrivando
addirittura ai sette elementi ufficialmente accreditati.
Qualche punto di contatto e di continuità con il lavoro precedente
si è mantenuto ma solo in "Black Hole Eyes" e nella conclusiva
"Karma".
Non c'è dubbio, "Introspective" testimonia il coraggio
ed il desiderio di cambiare del gruppo norvegese; mostra una scrittura che
si è mantenuta a livelli eccelsi ed una qualità esecutiva
di prim'ordine, tutti elementi che ne fanno senza dubbio una delle migliori
uscite del 2006.
C'è un però: mi è sembrato un disco più costruito,
volutamente più accondiscendente nello sfruttare la scia del prog
moderno che vende qualche copia in più della media, per intenderci
il modello Flower Kings, Riverside e compagnia.
Insomma, ho avuto le conferme positive che cercavo ma rimango più
legato affettivamente alla maggior monodirezionalità, spontaneità
e bellezza estetica di "Retrospective"…. Sarà perché
preferisco le retrospezioni alle introspezioni ??
- I must admit I was
really anxious for listening to the second Retroheads album because, after
the wonderful debut cd, I was looking for a simple confirmation: may I include
this norwegian band among the greatest present prog-acts or not ?
The first positive confirmation came just from the first notes of the new
album: the band doesn't want to repeat itself with the same style. "Introspective"
is no more univocally Pink Floyd oriented as "Retrospective" was
in my opinion, having developed a wider range of progressive rock influences.
It's overall more complex and, at the same time, even closer to the typical
melodic new-prog from the nineties. About the new-prog closeness, try to
listen to "Living In A Bubble" and you'll seem to hear Damian
Wilson singing and Landmarq playing.
The only tracks where "Introspective" is in contact with the previous
album are "Black Hole Eyes" and the final "Karma".
These changes of style have a reason why for sure: maybe the changes of
line-up and the addiction of two members more ? Maybe ! Now Retroheads is
a seven-piece band with Tore Bø Bnedixen, Tommy Berre and Ann-Kristen
Brendixen as early survivors.
Well, what's the official answer to the beginning's question? Retroheads
is one of the best current acts in Europe and "Retrospective"
is the living proof.
