- Nel curriculum di Ray
Wilson sono citate alcune collaborazioni di discreto rilievo tra cui la
militanza nel gruppo scozzese degli Stiltskin, ma è la dicitura "ex-Genesis"
che da lustro alla carriera di Ray sebbene il suo contributo alla storica
band inglese si sia limitata all'ultimo e, secondo me sottovalutato, "Calling
All Stations" del 1996. E' proprio grazie a questa illustre vetrina
che le sue credenziali si sono irrobustite ed ha così potuto dimostrare
al mondo le sue doti vocali non comuni, poi costruendoci sopra una carriera
solista che con questo nuovo disco "The Next Best Thing" è
giunta al terzo episodio (live acustico compreso). Una voce bellissima,
molto espressiva e profonda, capace di scaldare al punto giusto una miscela
sonora che va dal rock americano graffiante (anche se mai troppo grezzo)
a quello più ricercato ed intimista. I brani sono tutti molto brevi
e diretti senza fronzoli o ricami inutili, vanno dritti all'obiettivo dell'intrattenimento
rock. Tuttavia, da grande estimatore della sua ugola, preferisco Ray alle
prese con i brani più sofisticati come "These Are The Changes"
(per la serie: dall'11 settembre il mondo è cambiato ..) ed "Ever
The Reason", quest'ultima la mia preferita in assoluto. Morbida ed
altamente evocativa, "Alone" segue le orme degli ultimi U2. Infine
"Adolescent Breakdown" è veramente l'unico brano accostabile
alla breve esperienza genesiana di Ray.
"The Nest Best Thing" è un album che certamente consiglio
a tutti gli amanti del rock sia schitarrato che adulto e raffinato, nella
speranza che riesca a raggiungere il successo americano che "Calling
All Stations" non ottenne a suo tempo e che rappresentò il cosiddetto
il motivo "ufficiale" per cui Ray fu allontanato dai Genesis.

- Many people had listened
to Ray Wilson's voice for the first time when he was hired from Genesis
to sing for "Calling All Stations" back in 1996. I remember I
thought: "Oooh a good singer, at last. I couldn't stand Phil Collins
no more !!!". That brief experience gave him a worldwide popularity
which he built his own solo career on: "The Next Best Thing" is
the second studio album. I'm a big fan of his deep and really expressive
voice, able to warm a typical Usa rock style sometimes rough (but not too
much) oftened refined and sophisticated. I mostly liked the refined side
of this album that is songs like "These Are The Changes" (the
world has changed after the Twin Towers) and "Ever The Reason":
this last one is absolutely my favourite song. "Alone" follows
the traces of the latest U2, while "Adolescent Breakdown" reminds
me his Genesis period.
This album is definitely the next best thing you should buy and I really
hope it will catch the american success that "Calling All Stations"
couldn't reach. Was it the so-called official reason why he was invited
to leave Genesis?
