- I Rag I Ryggen illuminarono
come una meteora l'attivissima scena prog svedese degli anni settanta con
un unico album omonimo pubblicato nel 1975 per poi sciogliersi nel 1977
dopo una discreta attività concertistica in madrepatria.
Il loro unico disco è stato ora ristampato dalla Transubstans corredato
da un booklet ricchissimo di foto ed informazioni e fornito di ben tre tracce
aggiuntive.
La formazione è a due chitarre, basso, organo, percussioni e voce:
le due chitarre lanciano fendenti molto incisivi e distorti, accentuati
dalla voce anch'essa tagliente di Jonas Warnerbring che canta sia in inglese
che in lingua madre; tutto ciò è riscaldato dall'organo Hammond
saggiamente sempre in primo piano e dalle ottime linee di basso.
Il disco è convincente seppur stilisticamente un po' troppo dispersivo
poiché spazia forse con troppa disinvoltura dall' hard-rock sporco
e settantiano di "Det Kan Val Inte vara farligt" e di "You
Know It Ain't Easy" ai temi di folk nordico di "Spangaforsen Brus"
per poi spostarsi verso le divagazioni pop romantiche (dell'epoca, si intende)
di "Queen Of Darkness". I brani citati, giudicati singolarmente,
fanno la loro egregia figura, ma rappresentano dei tasselli troppo diversi
tra loro di un collage dispersivo ed un po' confusionario, forse il sintomo
di un gruppo ancora alla ricerca di un'identità precisa, che che
non ebbero poi il tempo di trovare a causa del prematuro scioglimento.
Sto forse sottilizzando troppo dimenticandomi che i sette brani hanno tutti
un buon impatto sull'ascoltatore: con "Naked Man" si torna all'hard
rock ma meno sanguigno, più pulito nei suoni di chitarra ed arricchito
da parti di flauto, mentre la conclusiva "Sanningsserum" si fa
apprezzare grazie ai continui dialoghi tra chitarra ed Hammond con rievocazioni
ripetute dei vecchi Deep Purple ed Uriah Heep.
Le tre tracce bonus dal vivo sono invece abbastanza superflue soprattutto
per la resa sonora non certo impeccabile che esaspera troppo la ruvidezza
delle chitarre.
Non ritengo che questo disco sia un classico imprescindibile della scena
svedese ma meritava sicuramente il recupero discografico da parte della
Transubstans.
- The swedish band Rag
I Ryggen had a meteoric success thanks to their only eponymous album released
in 1975; after gigging around the Stockholm area, they disbanded in 1977.
Now swedish label Transubstans put on cd this album with a very rich booklet
plenty of photos and informations about the band. Finally there are three
(but not unforgettable) bonus tracks.
The line-up featured two guitars, bass, organ, drums and vocals: the rough
and dirty guitar playing is the real trademark of Rag I Ryggen sound together
with Jonas Warnerbring's voice. This seventies hard rock approach is warmed
by pleasant Hammond parts always in the foreground … and that's a
good thing in my opinion.
Each of the seven tracks has something interesting to offer, but the whole
album is overall a little wasteful: you will find the dirty hard rock of
"Det Kan Val Inte vara farligt" and "You Know It Ain't Easy",
the folkish themes of "Spangaforsen Brus" and even the romantic
pop of "Queen Of Darkness". That was maybe the sympton of a band
still in search of a more defined identity.
"Naked Man" is a come back to the pure hard rock of the first
songs but the sound is less bloody and cleaner with more than welcomed flute
inserts. The closing "Sanningsserum" is a perfect blend of Deep
Purple and Uriah Heep with pleasant dialogues between guitars and Hammond.
Well, It's not certainly a classic from swedish rock scene but I think it
deserved to be re-discovered.
