- Ho ascoltato e commentato
questo demo autoprodotto proprio durante il mese di novembre per un caso
del tutto fortuito. Già, perché Novembre è proprio
il mese che ha dato il nome a questo quintetto olandese e che ha ispirato
il tono e le ambientazioni della loro musica che loro stessi definiscono
"autunnale", malinconica ma anche ricca di quelle sfumature cromatiche
che caratterizzano questa stagione.
Il gruppo esiste dal 1995, sebbene sotto spoglie differenti ed il background
musicale dei componenti ha radici prevalentemente metal; questo demo, registrato
in presa diretta ma in maniera professionale ed ottimamente confezionato,
contiene cinque canzoni, di cui quattro complete ed un estratto che compariranno
nel disco d'esordio di prossima pubblicazione.
La descrizione che i November danno di se stessi calza a pennello nellle
prime tre tracce, "Afterglow", "Slipping Through Our Hands"
e "Star Of The Fields", che mostrano una vena acustica e malinconica
assai spiccata, dove sono il pianoforte di Martijn Hoekstra e la chitarra
acustica di Stef Kohler a farla da padroni. Le melodie sono eleganti e ben
costruite ma abbastanza monotematiche e dal peso specifico non sufficiente
ad impressionare.
Decisamente più interessanti sono "At Midnight" e l'estratto
di "Caravan", dove si riscontrano più sostanza, varietà
ed alcuni tentativi abbastanza riusciti di contaminazione sonora: nella
prima il gruppo si cimenta in un buon neo prog romantico con tanto di assolo
alla Marillion molto efficace, mentre nella seconda (di cui attendiamo gli
sviluppi) emerge una chitarra per la prima volta graffiante e dai connotati
chiaramente post-rock.
Insomma, un assaggio con qualche riserva sulla prima metà ma tutto
sommato promettente grazie alla seconda parte. In attesa del disco intero.
- November is the name
of this five-piece from The Netherlands but it's also the month I have listened
and reviewed their first official demo cd. November is even the month they
take inspiration from while they were writing music: the "Autumn Music",
as they call it, melancholic but also plenty of the typical chromatic shadings
of this season.
This self-description is a faithful picture of the first three tracks ,
"Afterglow", "Slipping Through Our Hands" and "Star
Of The Fields", all ruled by Stef Kohler's acoustic guitar and Martijn
Hoekstra's piano. It's satisfactory stuff, with refined melodies, but not
enough to satisfy the most exacting listeners.
"At Midnight" and the excerpt from "Caravan" are absolutely
better: the first is nothing more than a symphonic new-prog song with a
beautiful guitar solo in Marillion vein and the second features a post-rock
guitar job and an overall search of more substance and experimentation.
I'm waiting for the full lenght album, in the hope the second half of this
demo prevail over the rest.
