NEMO - SI Partie 1


Benchè io rimanga un acceso sostenitore della maggior immediatezza e linearità dei primi dischi dei Nemo, non si può certo negare che disco dopo disco, questi quattro musicisti francesi non siano cresciuti, scegliendo di puntare sulla ricerca spasmodica di sentieri musicali sempre più impervi, complicati e che li potessero condurre nell'olimpo della musica colta. I mezzi tecnici perché questa ambizione non apparisse comica e pretenziosa ci sono sempre stati ed ho più volte avuto modo di sottilineare come il chitarrista/cantante JP Louveton ed il tastierista Guillaume Fontaine garantissero enormi potenzialità sia tecniche che creative. "SI Partie 1" è il loro quarto album in studio, un concept album con i testi in francese (quindi non posso approfondire le tematiche affrontate) e con una copertina assai accattivante: la loro è una proposta molto vicina al metal classico melodico che incontra il rock progressivo sfiorando ripetutamente il jazz ma senza che sinteticamente si possa parlare di progressive metal, soprattutto per evitare di inserire i Nemo in un calderone in cui si sentirebbero a mio parere estranei. Il disco si compone di sole cinque tracce molto lunghe e decisamente articolate ma, purtroppo, non sempre supportate dalla stessa qualità compositiva. Dividerei quindi il disco esattamente in due metà speculari con la centrale "Miroirs" a fare da spartiacque. La prima metà, costituita da "Douce Mort" e "Ici, maintenant", si fa apprezzare più per l'abile costruzione sonora, varia e piacevolmente complicata che per gli spunti musicali realmente al di sopra delle righe. Ma il disco è un irresistibile crescendo di emozioni con il passare dei minuti: "Miroirs" comincia ad aggiungere anche sostanza compositiva, mentre con "Si" si assite al vero salto di qualità. Il brano parte lento e malinconico per poi sprigionare un muro sonoro imponente di chitarra e tastiere di notevole impatto. Gli ultimi venti minuti del disco sono a disposizione di "Apprentis Sorciers" per mostrarci la vera grandezza dei Nemo: definire questa canzone una libido musicale è limitativo. L'anima jazz di Fontaine emerge prepotentemente materializzandosi con finissimi interventi di pianoforte e Grand Piano, ma direi che tutti i musicisti dimostrano una coesione ed affiatamento invidiabili. La suite è composta da cinque parti tutte mozzafiato senza i cedimenti palesati nella prima parte del disco. Insomma, "Si Partie 1" è un disco che si eleva di parecchie spanne sopra la media delle proposte a lui omologhe, ma il mio auspicio è che "SI Partie II" di prossima pubblicazione cominci sul medesimo livello degli ultimi 28/30 minuti di questa prima parte.


Nemo already have released three full-length studio albums and one live album last year. Who have listened to them knows so well how much these four french musicians improved the compositions and executions. They have been walking more and more complex musical roots, maybe to reach a more mature audience; this ambition was always supported by a great skillness from all the four members, especially from JP Louveton and Guillaime Fontaine. Well, "SI Partie 1" is their fourth studio album, a concept album with french lyrics (so don't ask me what this concept is all about): the music style is the same of the previous albums but a little more complex and plenty of changes of mood. I love defining it as metal sound meets progressive rock, nearly touching jazz music. In few words, an unique and enchanting blend of styles but not prog-metal as many people used to think. I must divide the album in two specular half: the first made of "Douce Mort" and "Ici, maintenant", where the great skillness is not balanced with fresh and impressive compositions in my opinion. The album really starts to take-off from "Miroirs" on and it will never low the quote. "SI" is a beautiful track starting slow and melancholic and then giving off both a strong wall of sound and a catching rhythm. The last twenty minutes are at "Apprentis Sorciers" disposal to make everybody know how much Nemo is a great band. The Fontaine's jazz soul comes out with strenght: his piano inserts are absolutely fine and breathtaking together with the guitar lines. This track also shows the great cohesion and harmony of all the four Nemo's musicians. The suite is made of five parts, each one pleasant and varied from start to finish. Sensational !!!! "SI Partie 1" is the living proof that Nemo is much better than most of the bands playing more or less the same music; now I hope that "SI Partie 2" will be out very soon and will start the same way of the last 28/30 minutes of the part 1.
