- L'ammirazione profonda
e genuina verso un gruppo musicale del passato è un sentimento difficile
da nascondere, che deve essere dichiarato e poi ostentato in tutta la sua
forza. I Mirage, quintetto francese, si sono perdutamente innamorati dei
Camel (come biasimarli ??!!?) ed hanno pensato di dichiararlo al mondo intero
con questo loro debutto discografico intitolato "A Secret Place".
Eppure l'incipit della prima traccia del disco, "Nothing On TV Tonight",
esibisce un giro di tastiere alla "Garden Party" che richiamerebbe
alla memoria più i primi Marillion che un'operazione di clonazione
dei Camel. La storia del progressive sinfonico/romantico è piena
di simili dichiarazioni d'amore per il gruppo di Andrew Latimer, ma i Mirage
sono stati forse gli unici a spingersi così tanto in là ed
a prostrarsi ai loro piedi. Sono stati gli unici a prelevare la parte iniziale
di "Lunar Sea" costruendoci sopra la loro "Untold Stories",
oppure il tema principale di "Harbour Of Tears" su cui hanno sviluppato
"Coming Out Of Nowhere". Infine hanno anche dedicato una loro
composizione strumentale a Latimer, intitolandola "For Andy".
Come detto, alcuni brani dei Camel sono stati solo presi come spunto (infatti
non sono presenti covers) e sviluppati con la farina del loro sacco dimostrandoci
che, al di là della fortissima influenza subìta, questi cinque
ragazzi francesi (con la brava Agnès Forner al flauto ed alla voce)
ci sanno comunque fare.
"A Secret Place" è senza dubbio un buon esordio, un'ottima
terapia per sfogare la propria camel-dipendenza, dopo il quale però
mi aspetterei se non proprio una forte personalizzazione dello stile (che
ritengo improbabile), almeno un abbandono delle molteplici e nobili citazioni.

a famous band of the past is a feeling so hard to hide. It must be declared
and showed off with force. If I tell you that the band I'm talking about
is called Mirage, what's the famous band according to you ? Of course, Camel
!! These five guys from France are really great Camel fans and this debut
album called "A Secret Place" is their own declaration of love.
However nobody would have imagined a Camel-clone album, after having listened
to the first track "Nothing On TV Tonight", because it's more
a neo-progressive song a-la Marillion. But from the following track on,
it's pure and heavenly Camel!!! "Untold Stories" has been clearly
built around the "Lunar Sea" theme (the band cleverly declared
it in the cd-booklet); the same story for "Coming Out Of Nowhere"
which starts with the main theme taken from "Harbour Of Tears";
then the quotations are over and the band shows us their own compostions.
"For Andy" is a tribute song to Andrew Latimer, a so good instrumental
guitar-oriented song.
Overall "A Secret Place" is a strong debut album, a good therapy
to give vent to their Camel deep love. I will be very happy if this love
will go on, but I'm waiting for the next album in the hope they at least
abandon the several Camel quotations.
