- Dopo aver esordito
con un disco non molto apprezzato dalla critica, i belgi Mindgames tornano
a far parlare di sé con "Actors In A Play", sempre rigorosamente
autoprodotto (ed anche ben prodotto, direi) nonché corredato da un
booklet con una veste grafica degno di budget ben più sostanziosi.
Il new prog è il loro credo, qui esibito con sincera passione e convinzione,
incuranti di quanti lo criticano come incapace di lasciare un'impronta indelebile.
In effetti le nobili citazioni sono disseminate per tutto l'arco del disco,
talvolta persino in maniera imbarazzante ed i nomi sono più o meno
sempre gli stessi: Pendragon, Iq, Iluvatar anche se la similitudine più
calzante è quella con gli svizzeri Clepsydra per il timbro e la pronuncia
inglese del cantante Bart Schram, per l'estrema pulizia del suono e la metrica
delle canzoni. Se il new prog come sterile e spesso inconcludente esercizio
di genere ha stufato anche il sottoscritto, non per questo merita di essere
definitivamente accantonato ed i Mindgames mi hanno trasmesso emozioni positive
poiché al vestito romantico ed a volte sdolcinato hanno saputo aggiungere
parecchia sostanza, idee e belle melodie intricate al punto giusto.
Il disco inoltre trasuda professionalità e grande attenzione per
gli arrangiamenti, ma anche qualche momento di stanchezza e prolissità,
soprattutto nell'eccessiva insistenza su alcuni ritornelli (vedi per esempio
"Dramatis Persona").
L'attacco di "The Statue" è sontuoso e fa lievitare la
nostra immaginazione, così come il finale pomposo.
Ma è la mezz'ora finale il meglio del disco: l'atmosferica e delicata
"Sagittarius" (Iq docet qui), "Royalty In Jeopardy"
e la suite "Both Sides Of The Show" hanno la classica marcia in
più e danno ampia dimostrazione che nel 2006 si può ancora
scrivere dell'ottimo New Prog.
Insomma "Actors In A Play" è un disco interessante e fresco,
che a causa del genere troppo inquadrato, riconoscibile e derivativo rischiava
di perdersi nella mediocrità di tante uscite recenti e che invece,
grazie a sei tracce di spessore, raccomando di aggiungere alla vostra collezione
di New Prog del vecchio continente.
- After having released
a debut album not so appreciated by the specialized critics, the belgian
New-Prog act Mindgames comes back with a new album entitled "Actors
In A Play". Again, It's a self-produced disc and what a good production,
I dare say: the sound is absolutely clean and really professional as well
as the refined artwork.
The New-Prog rock is their creed, exhibited with sincere passion and conviction,
infact the whole album is plenty of well-known quotations, mainly Pendragon,
Iq and Iluvatar.
As a matter of fact I found the closest comparison to Clepsydra sound: Bart
Schram's voice and english pronounce, the guitar lines and the metric are
so close to the swiss band.
Anyway, this is not enough to recommend the purchase to any New-Prog lover:
I know he wants more than a poor New-Prog exercise and, believe me, he can
get it here !!
"Actors In A Play" transmits positive emotions through six great
tracks, deeply inspired and very well played; each one has something to
offer in terms of fine melodies and good arrangements.
My favourite tracks are the opener "The Benefit Of Anxiety", "The
Statue", whose introduction and ending are pure magic to my ears. In
any case, the highest peak is reached by the final half-an-hour of music
featuring "Sagittarius", "Royalty In Jeopardy" and the
suite "Both Sides Of The Show" which are the living proof that
in 2006 it's still possible to write and play stunning New-Prog songs.
Well, this is an album that could have mingled among the several New-Prog
outings, instead I recommend to add "Actors In A Play" to your
favourite european New-Prog collection. Very good job, guys !!!
