I tedeschi Martigan
sono per il sottoscritto una scoperta dell'ultim'ora, sebbene "Man
Of the Moment" sia già il loro terzo lavoro. Le coordinate stilistiche
della loro proposta si sovrappongono geometricamente a quelle di Marillion,
dei primi Arena ed Iq ma strizzando gli occhi sovente ad un pop raffinato
e più disimpegnato. L'originalità non alloggia dunque in casa
Martigan, ma vi assicuro che l'onestà e la capacità di scrivere
buona musica vi hanno trovato fissa dimora.
Veniamo alle canzoni: ottima l'apertura di "The Pride", molto
sinfonica ed appariscente, mentre la successiva "Out Of Sight"
mi lascia un po' l'amaro in bocca soprattutto per la non eccelsa performance
vocale di Mirko Baumer, qui in veste di ospite (??!?). La breve introduzione
strumentale a "The Feast" sembra estratta dal primo album degli
Arena (il giro di chitarra è praticamente lo stesso). Poi in "7th
Floor" abbandonano per un istante la matrice neo-prog romantica e si
avvicinano al pop-aor raffinato in stile Cutting Crew, John Wetton nell'ariosità
e semplicità del ritornello ma soprattutto nella struttura melodica
tipicamente anglosassone. Stesso discorso per "Permission", il
brano forse più banale e meno brillante con quel suo ritornellino
facile facile che invade di forza i territori Aor. L'album si chiude poi
con l'episodio che preferisco in assoluto, "The Mask & The Raven
II": qui i vocalizzi di Kai Marckwordt (un bravissimo cantante, versatile
e molto dotato) abbandonano la matrice gabrielana e mi riportano alla mente
soprattutto il miglior Greg Lake; si assiste inoltre ad un continuo inseguirsi
di fughe tastieristiche e chitarristiche e ad una architettura più
complessa e ricca di cambiamenti di umore.
I Martigan di "The Pride", di "The Feast", di "Images
& Tales" e dell'appena citata "The Mask & The Raven II"
mi hanno trasmesso emozioni vere e genuine, mentre il resto del materiale
riempie il cd, in maniera peraltro più che soddisfacente, ma fatica
a lasciare il segno…. Non è proprio "l'album del momento"
ma poco ci manca.
I've never listened
to anything about this band from Germany. "Man Of The Moment"
is just Martigan's third album: the band is clearly influenced by the neo-progressive
giants as Marillion, Iq and early Arena with a beautiful touch of the most
refined english pop/aor.
Mmmh, I liked this album !! The opener "The Pride" is wonderfully
synphonic, while "Out Of Sight" is not at the same level due to
a bad vocal performance by the guest Mirko Baumer. The instrumental introduction
to "The Feast" seems to be taken from the first Arena album (the
guitar work is almost the same). With "7th Floor" they abandon
for a while the neo-progressive vein to play a bright example of english
pop very close to the Cutting Crew/John Wetton stuff. The album ends with
my favourite song "The Masq & The Raven II": here Kai Marckwordt
(what a beautiful voice!) forgets for a while who's Peter Gabriel and mostly
reminds me Greg Lake's voice. The keyboards and guitars play the main role
in this song and the architecture is quite complex and full of magic changes
of mood. Really impressive !!
I liked this album almost in its entirety, but in my opinion, the true Martigan
style is represented by songs like "The Pride", "The Feast",
"Images & Tales" and of course "The Mask & The Raven
II ".
Is it the "album of the moment" ?? Maybe not, but it's one of
them !!
