In the last few months I had the chance to know some interesting dutch bands as Us and Knight Area. Reviewing their albums I underlined how much the dutch progressive rock scene was getting one of my favourite in Europe.
I wouldn't like to annoy my readers but I must go over this subject. Mangrove is another interesting dutch band to keep in mind especially if you're very close to romantic progressive rock in the vein of Genesis, early Marillion and Iq. "Touch Wood" is not just their debut having recorded "Cold World" under the name of Brainstorm in 1998 and "Massive Hollowness" three years later. Yes, there's nothing new under the sun and any way I couldn't unsubscribed this point of view. Everything seems taken for granted but I willingly close my eyes in front of a clear lack of originality if, on the other side, I find emotionally, well written and well played songs as "Fatal Signs", "Help Me", "Wizard Of Tunes" and "City Of Darkness". Roland Van Der Horst has a velvety (not "woody") touch and a so deep romantic vein when he plays his guitar; he also sings quite well. Chris Jonker seems to have learnt the lessons of keyboards-players like Mark Kelly, Martin Orford and Clive Nolan very well.
Overall "Touch Wood" is a convincing album, although they have preferred to hide themselves behind the safety of an inflated and not so original style. I already know what to expect from them with the next album. Go on this way !!!
