- A breve distanza dal
discreto secondo album dei Mangrove "Touch Wood", commentato anche
su queste pagine, il quartetto olandese ritorna con la sua terza fatica
intitolata "Facing The Sunset". Benchè il lavoro sia sostanzialmente
all'insegna della continuità stilistica, contiene alcuni buoni motivi
per considerarlo un passo avanti rispetto al precedente: la musica infatti
non si divincola dal solito schema new-prog sinfonico e romantico, un sottogenere
così tanto sfruttato nei Paesi Bassi dall'aver appiattito molto le
proposte progressive del Paese. Tuttavia va sottolineato come le composizioni
si siano piacevolmente dilatate (sono solo quattro ed abbastanza lunghe)
ed evidenzino un'architettura di base più complessa; i suoni sono
assai più ricercati che in passato e questa volta la netta sensazione
è che i Mangrove si siano abbeverati da una fonte più antica
e nobile, senza passaggi intermedi.
Non si registrano debolezze significative o momenti di palese stanchezza
auditiva sebbene l'aria che si respira sia molto familiare ed evochi limpidamente
i classici sinfonici; in realtà qui conta maggiormente il buon livello
di maturità raggiunto dal gruppo ed il discreto bagaglio tecnico
dei musicisti, su cui spicca certamente il chitarrista Roland Van Der Horst,
dallo stile hackettiano sì scolastico ma pulito ed incisivo, soprattutto
in fase solista. E' difficile, come detto, estrapolare i momenti migliori
da un lavoro che si fa apprezzare lungo tutta la sua durata, ma mi sento
comunque di esprimemermi a favore della strumentale ed appassionante "There
Must Be Another Way" e della conclusiva "Hidden Dreams",
una lunga e variegata suite chiaramente debitrice agli ultimi Iq.
Insomma, i miracoli sono già rari per definizione ed avete intuito
che comunque risiedono altrove, ma in "Facing The Sunset" troverete
di che soddisfare la vostra fame di prog romantico ispirato e suonato decisamente
bene. Sono pronto a scommettere che se il prossimo disco evidenzierà
un ulteriore miglioramento, i Mangrove non falliranno nel tentativo di uscire
da un anonimato che ancora li avvolge.

the first time when they released "Touch Wood" back in 2004: now
the dutch symphonic act is back with the third album called "Facing
The Sunset".
Well, nothing seems to be changed under the sun: the overall symphonic attitude,
the romantic and new-prog themes, the great influence of Steve Hackett's
guitar playing as well as a crystal clear recording and precise executions.
So, why do I like this album much more ? Maybe because there are only four
but lenghty songs and much more complexity than before. Or maybe because
there are a larger number of good ideas inside here.
In short, I found a band more mature and aware of his great potential: the
four songs clearly takes inspiration from the classic symphonic giants but
it's not a problem, 'cause they're all plenty of exciting moods and melodies
and that's enough for me.
Although it's not easy here, I want to give my preference to the instrumental
and breathaking "There Must Be Another Way" but also to the final
track "Hidden Dreams".
As definition, miracles don't happen every day and they're far from here,
but you can be sure that a "Facing the Sunset" purchase won't
be disappointing. If the next album should be even better I'm also pretty
sure Mangrove will come out from the land of the unknown where they're currently
living. Recommended !
