Dopo l'ottima prova
degli Spektrum ed il meraviglioso ritorno dei Galleon dell'anno scorso,
ora la label svedese Progress records promuove l'esordio ufficiale dei Liquid
Scarlet, un giovane quintetto capitanato da Olov Andersson alla chitarra
e da Johan Lundström alla batteria e proveniente dal nord della Svezia.
Ma non aspettatevi il prog sinfonico moderno, platinato e ridondante di
tastiere delle due band appena citate perché qui le coordinate stilistiche
sono quelle più spigolose, cupe, malinconiche e vagamente retrò
del rock progressivo contemporaneo che ha come benchmark i Porcupine Tree
e soprattutto i Radiohead.
Direi che il paragone con la band di "Ok Computer" calza abbastanza
bene anche se un po' stretto, perché i Liquid Scarlet hanno dimostrato
di saper andare oltre introducendo sia alcune ombrosità sonore tipicamente
nordiche che rievocano i Landberk, sia pure una maggiore propensione alle
melodie ariose e sinfoniche. E' solo un'apparente ed, a mio parere, efficacissima
contraddizione.
"Città nuova" è il mio brano preferito: 8 minuti
abbondanti di musica malinconica e cadenzata, dolcemente accompagnata dalle
tastiere di Frida Lundström e dalla voce filtrata di Markus Fagervall.
Poi il finale sinfonico per tastiere e chitarra di più ampio respiro
ti trapassa il cuore con la stessa precisione ed infallibilità con
cui il miglior Stefan Edberg passava gli avversari con il suo micidiale
rovescio. Anche "Molok" però non è da meno e mette
in risalto proprio la loro vena più sinfonica ed evocativa sottolineata
poc'anzi. Ci sono veramente pochi cedimenti o passaggi a vuoto per un gruppo
al debutto discografico: infatti ciascun brano è capace di offrire
con incredibile puntualità uno spunto interessante o quanto meno
un'ottima scusa per ascoltarlo di nuovo con estremo piacere.
Se siete abituali frequentatori dei locali svedesi specializzati in buona
musica ed incappate in cinque ragazzi molto giovani che indossano rigorosamente
abiti bianchi e suonano tremendamente bene, probabilmente state assistendo
ad un concerto dei Liquid Scarlet. Godetevelo fino alla fine e poi compratevi
il disco !!
Per me già da top ten 2004; eppure se ci penso, i Radiohead non mi
sono mai piaciuti tanto. I conti sembrerebbero non tornare ….
Only few months
have passed since the good Spektrum release and the wonderful Galleon come-back;
now the swedish label Progress records hits the mark again by promoting
the official debut of Liquid Scarlet, a young swedish five-piece led by
Olov Andersson and Johan Lundström. However don't expect the symphonic
prog full of keyboards and mellow melodies of the two above-mentioned bands,
because this album sounds more dark, melancholic and finds his roots in
the seventies. I think they can be compared to Radiohead / Porcupine Tree
music above all, even if this comparison is not enough to describe their
music. They were able to go beyond thanks to some typical nothern europe
dark attitudes (very close to Landberk works) and an higher bent for aerial
and symphonic melodies. Yes, that's only an apparent and, in my opinion,
really effective contradiction.
"Citta' nuova" is my favourite track with its eight minutes of
melancholic athmosphere, sweetly accompained by the Frida Lundström
keys and the filtered voice of Markus Fagervall. The final duet guitars/keys
really breaks your heart . "Molok" keeps the same high-quality
level, just showing that deeper symphonic approach mentioned before. Believe
me, there are not any weak tracks inside here and it's really impressive
for a young band like this.
If you are frequent visitors of swedish venues specialized in good music
and you accidentally find five guys strictly white-weared and playing so
good, maybe you're attending a Liquid Scarlet gig. Enjoy it and then buy
the album !
