Mark Knopfler used to give us an example of his abilities with a strict biennial cadence and everytime he makes us remember what's his current artistic dimension out of Dire Straits.
When I reviewed his last release "Ragpicker's Dream" I had imagined Mark lying under a cactus waiting for his retired time but now I must honestly admit I was wrong. The new album "Shangri-la" is probably his best solo work: "Boom Like That" sounds like the previous hit-singles, that is very close to Dire Straits attitude. I think Mark's aim is to keep alive the DS appeal among the wide audience by using the hit-single. The true MK fans usually watch beyond both the hit-single and a beautiful song like "Postcards From Paraguay": this new album offers everything they want to listen from Mark.
"The Trawlerman's Song", "Our Shangri-La", and "Whoop De Doo" is a triumph of warmess and fascination as well as "Back To Tupelo". However you must reach the last song to find the real highlight of the album: "Don't Crash The Ambulance" is a refined track with a strong main theme by guitar and harmonica, enriched by the clever lyrics ..."Watch and Learn, Junior, Watch and Learn….".
I recommend you to buy this album despite the presence of an unuseful bonus Dvd included featuring an interview to the band. Somebody calls them "legal thefts" and I agree ....
