Non ci è dato
sapere se Mark Knopfler abbia deciso di mandare solo temporaneamente in
letargo i Dire Straits oppure se la cosa possa ritenersi definitiva. La
certezza è che la sua avventura solista iniziata nel 1996 con "Golden
Heart" è ormai giunta al suo terzo capitolo, se escludiamo progetti
di altro tipo, partecipazioni, colonne sonore, ecc.
Musicalmente parlando "The Ragpiecker's Dream" non stupisce e
non coglie impreparati, perché porta avanti le stesse idee e le stesse
ambientazioni del precedente "Sailing To Philadelphia" all'insegna
cioè di un country/western blues acustico ed intimistico. Ai veri
cultori di questo grande artista non sarà certamente sfuggito che
nell'ultima realizzazione in studio dei Dire Straits "On Every Street"
si potevano già scorgere i primi germogli di questa lenta, graduale,
ma inesorabile trasformazione: canzoni come "Iron Hand" (il tema
acustico è qui ripreso abbastanza fedelmente in "Marbletown")
e la conclusiva "How Long" ne rappresentavano la prova più
evidente. I dischi di Notting Hillbillies e con Chet Atkins poi hanno fatto
il resto…
Che lo si accetti o meno, questo è il Mark Knopfler del nuovo millennio,
sempre più lontano dai Dire Straits e sempre più convinto
a ripercorrere le gesta dei campioni country blues americani. Fortunatamente
lo spessore artistico e la vena creativa che dopo vent'anni di carriera
sembra non volerlo proprio abbandonare del tutto gli consente di estratrre
dal cilindro le solite 4/5 perle che giustificano ampiamente l'acquisto
del disco. Mi riferisco a "Why Aye Man", alla dolcissima "A
Place Where We Used To Live" che eguaglia quel capolavoro che fu "Rudiger"
tratta da "Golden Heart". Poi c'è l'irresistibile ritmo
di "Quality Shoe", un brano che non si può fare a meno
di amare, di ballare ed ascoltare anche cinque volte consecutivamente.
Dunque un lavoro di gran classe e meritevole della vostra attenzione: ho
solo la sensazione che l'artista effervescente di idee e dispensatore di
emozioni profonde che è stato, si sia comodamente sdraiato all'ombra
di un imponente cactus in attesa della pensione.

Knopfler temporarily decided to go Dire Straits into hibernation or if it's
a definitive decision. Being a great Dire Straits fan I wouldn't be so happy
of the second possibility !! Anyway, "The Ragpicker's Dream" is
Knopfler's third solo albums, after "Golden Heart" and "Sailing
to Philadelphia": it brings ahead the same style of his previous works,
that is an intimistic, acoustic and american country rock blues. You can
accept it or not but this is the Mark knopfler of the new millenium, so
far from Dire Straits rock sound and closer and closer to country blues
american champions.
Fortunately after twenty years of wonderful music, the inspiring muse is
still with him and let him write those four/five excellent songs widely
justifying money you'll pay for this record. I'm talking about the opener
"Why Aye Man", the sweetest " A Place Where We Used To Live
" very close to that beautiful gem that was "Rudiger" from
"Golden Heart". There is also "Quality Shoe" who it's
really impossible to stand still with.
Overall it's an high class album and worthly of your attenction, but I think
that the effervescent artist of some years ago is now confortably lying
under a Cactus shadow, waiting for his retired time. A great Knopfler fan
is speaking…
