- Le vicende legate ai
canadesi Kaos Moon ci devono far tornare indietro con la memoria addirittura
alla metà degli anni ottanta allorché la band si chiamava
ancora Moon Project ed incideva le sue prime canzoni. Poi il cambio di nome
in quello attuale, lo scioglimento nel 1987, la collaborazione di Bernard
Oulette con i bravissimi Visible Wind e la rinascita nel 1993 che porterà
alla realizzazione del loro primo album uficiale "After The Storm".
Il resto è storia recente, con la pubblicazione per la Unicorn di
questo nuovissimo "The Circle Of Madness" che per il sottoscritto
rappresenta il primo approccio con la musica dei Kaos Moon. Devo ammettere
di essere rimasto favorevolmente colpito dalla loro proposta musicale, costituita
da una base pop decisamente commerciale su cui si inserisce un sinfonismo
progressivo (sia sonoro che strutturale) assai marcato, che riempie gli
spazi e ne accresce il peso specifico. Uno stile non molto intrigante o
particolarmente evoluto ma molto efficace che paragonerei a quello dei Saga
(tanto per rimanere in Canada) oppure, stringendo i confini nell'ambito
dell'etichetta per cui adesso incidono, a quello degli Xinema.
Sia "Eternal Light Avenue" che le successive "Say To Me"
e "Crawl" poggiano su una palese commerciabilità delle
linee vocali che stuccherà comprensibilmente il palato degli integralisti
del prog sinfonico, ma è altresì innegabile il ruolo tutt'altro
che marginale che le splendide aperture tastieristiche e gli interventi
di chitarra ricoprono all'interno dei brani citati. Pop sinfonico progressivo
oppure pop di classe e di sostanza: chiamatelo come volete ma è chiaro
che la semplice musica pop si trova tre o quattro gradini al di sotto. "The
Waves" è un brano che il mio lettore cd leggerà a lungo
in futuro: giro melodico avvolgente, ritornello perfetto e finale brillante
per violino e tastiere.
In definitiva, "The Circle Of Madness" va giudicato come un prodotto
rivolto ad una fascia di pubblico abbastanza vasta ma nel quale, sono sicuro,
anche gli ascoltatori più esigenti troveranno più di un motivo
per compiacersi dell'acquisto sostenuto.
- The story
behind this canadian band called Kaos Moon started at least in the early
eighties when the band was still called Moon Project and recorded the first
few tracks. Then the change of name to the current, the disband in 1987,
the collaboration of Bernard Oulette with Visibile Wind and the rebirth
(1993) with the debut album "After The Storm".
That's only a story for me, because the new album "The Circle Of Madness"
is my first approach to Kaos Moon music.
Although all the songs have a strong commercial appeal that many fans of
classic prog probably won't appreciate, they all are enriched with exciting
symphonic passages able to raise the interest for this album.
So I'm sure many people will love true gems as "Eternal Light Avenue",
"Say To Me" and "Crawl", clearly built around poppy
tunes but plenty of quite complex keyboards solos and beautiful guitar riffs.
You can call it symphonic prog pop or class-pop: make your choice but everybody
must admit the simple pop music is three or four steps down from Kaos Moon
music. Then I think "The Waves" is a song that my cd-player will
play many times in the next weeks: a perfect chorus and a wonderful closing
with keys and violin.
Overall "The Circle Of Madness" is an enjoyable work for a wide
audience (who likes Saga for example) but also the most exacting listeners
will find here more than one good reason to buy it.
