- I Groovector sono un
quintetto proveniente dalla Finlandia che, è proprio il caso di dirlo,
ci regala questo debutto discografico intitolato "Ultramarine",
stracolmo di una buona quantità di motivi per poterli annoverare
fra le più interessanti novità uscite degli ultimi anni.
In particolare, ritengo che i fans dei Camel, di tutto il versante più
melodico della scena di Canterbury dovrebbero prestare ancor più
attenzione a questi finlandesi. Infatti questo disco si compone di sette
lunghe tracce interamente strumentali, molto intriganti e proposte con grande
delicatezza e discrezione che trovano nell'onnipresente flauto di Teemu
Huunonen e nelle tastiere/Hammond di Mikko Heininen gli strumenti nella
veste di protagonisti assoluti.
In fase di composizione il gruppo sembra aver prediletto le melodie raffinate
ed intimistiche piuttosto che la ricerca del pezzo ad effetto. Ne consegue
che "Ultramarine" sia un disco più confacente a chi sa
ascoltare con pazienza e profondità , a chi cioè ama farsi
trasportare passivamente dalle trame talvolta intricate e non sbuffa con
disapprovazione di fronte, per esempio, ad una divagazione per solo pianoforte
(quella contenuta in "Elegie" per la cronaca). Quanti non dovessero
riconoscersi in questo profilo potrebbero effettivamente trovare il disco
abbastanza noioso sulla distanza dei quasi 65 minuti.
Ottima soprattutto l'apertura di "Krawagna", sempre in bilico
tra il tentativo di ricreare le atmosfere di "The Snow Goose"
ed una vena spaziale delle tastiere che mi ha ricordato qualcosa dei primi
Twelfth Night. Ma l'orientaleggiante "Selangor" non è da
meno con i suoi echi spazial-floydiani di grande efficacia e con la chitarra
di Rauli Viitala che nel finale finalmente si ritaglia un suo piccolo spazio
d'azione.
Il lavoro è chiuso meravigliosamente dalla lunga suite "Elegie"
che tira un po' le somme di quanto abbiamo potuto ammirare in questo piccolo
gioellino di prog strumentale.
Un gruppo molto promettente da tenere in grande considerazione per quello
che vorrà riproporci in futuro.

coming from Finland and the author of this nice debut allbum called "Ultramarine",
plenty of hundreads of good reasons to consider this band among the most
interesting and promising european prog act.
I think that especially fans of Camel and all the most melodic side of Canterbury
sound should pay more attention to these finnish guys.
All the seven (and totally instrumental) compositions inside here are, more
or less, really intriguing and very well played with a so large use of the
Teemu Huunonen's flute and the Mikko Heininen's hammond/keys. They absolutely
are the instruments that rule the game.
The band's songwriting process seems to have preferred the refined, atmospheric
and classic melodies rather than the sensational tracks. Consequently, "Ultramarine"
is more suitable for everyone's able to listen with patience and depth without
snorting in front of a piano solo (inside "Elegie" for example).
If you don't recognise yourself in this profile you'll probably find this
album quite boring.
"Krawagna" is a good opening, with some "The Snow Goose"
Camel traces and an overall spacey attitude of the keyboards in early Twelfth
Night vein.
"Selangor" is as good with its spacey/floydish echoes where the
guitar of Rauli Viitala at last finds its small corner to play.
The work is wonderfully closed by the long suite "Elegie" where
you can find the synthesis of everything the band is able to do.
As I told before, I'm a great fan of "Ultramarine" and I think
Groovector is a very promising act to keep in mind for their next releases.
