E' tornato Gary Hughes,
orfano dei Ten (per fortuna, vista l'imbarazzante qualità media degli
ultimi lavori) e dopo essersi liberato delle esclusive vesti di compositore
per la voce di Bob Catley come accaduto negli ultimi anni. Si ripresenta
al suo pubblico per proseguire la sua carriera solista dopo tre lavori pop/aor
di pregevolissima fattura.
"Once And Future King - Part.1" è un concept album ispirato
all'inflazionatissima saga di Re Artù (ci mancava proprio ??!!) e
realizzato con la partecipazione di numerosi ospiti che impersonano i vari
personaggi della saga (sulla falsariga di quel che fecero gli Ayeron nei
loro concept album). Inoltre la dicitura Part 1 mi fa dedurre che presto
ascolteremo la seconda parte.
Pur essendo, di fatto, il suo terzo lavoro solista, dal punto di vista stilistico
è tuttavia difficile considerare "Once…" come il
naturale successore di "Precious Ones", ma andrebbe piuttosto
isolato come un progetto a se stante che fonde in maniera abbastanza omogenea
l'Aor melodico a stelle e striscie dei primi Ten, l'hard rock più
robusto ed epico degli ultimi Ten e di Bob Catley e la maggiore morbidezza
e romanticismo del bellissimo "Strenght Of Heart".
Il problema è che l'album stenta a decollare, rimanendo saldamente
ancorato ai soliti cliche ritriti a cui Gary ci ha noiosamente abituati.
Per esempio la performance vocale di Damian Wilson in "Excalibur"
è come sempre convincente ma è fatalmente messa al servizio
di un brano al fulmicotone, molto heavy ed insipido. Così come Lana
Lane che presta la sua dolce ugola in "At The End Of Day" in duetto
con lo stesso Gary, un lentone strappalacrime tutto sommato gradevole ma
nulla di memorabile. "The Reason Why" è puro Aor ma troppo
scontato e dal ritornello noioso.
Il lavoro migliora con "King For A Day" cantata splendidamente
da Bob Catley e sostanzialmente in linea con il materiale presente proprio
nei suoi dischi recenti. Sembra quasi che il connubbio Hughes/Catley sia
l'unico in grado di dare risultati almeno apprezzabili.
Insomma, l'album nel complesso raggiunge un'ampia sufficienza ma non possiede
né l'alone di magia né il potere evocativo di cui qualsiasi
concept album dovrebbe essere circondato. Inoltre mi offre l'ennesima conferma
della preoccupante crisi creativa in cui versa l'artista inglese ormai da
qualche anno. Tristemente superfluo, ve lo dice un grande e delusissimo
fan di Gary Hughes.

Ten's orphan (fortunately, 'cause I didn't like the last 3 Ten albums) and
no more as the songwriter for Bob Catley. He's back to go on with his solo
career after three pop/aor beautiful albums.
"Once And Future King - Part.1" is a concept album inspired by
the King Arthur saga (what an original idea !!??!!) full of many guest appearances
such as Damian Wilson, Lana lane, Bob Catley. Nevertheless, musically it
can be considered as the natural follower of "Precious ones" and
"Strenght Of Heart", because it's really harder, heavier than
them; it's a mix of earliest Ten, latest Ten (yes, they were different !)
and Bob Catley solo stuff.
Believe me, it's not a matter of style, there's no one track able to reach
a good quality average: "Excalibur" is a fast song, with the usual
impressive Damian Wilson's vocal performance, but it's not enough to listen
to it a second time. In "At The End Of Day" Gary duets with Lana
Lane; the song is slow and mellow, a quite enjoyable song. Another good
track is "King For A Day" with Bob Catley on vocals.
Overall this album reaches a bare pass mark but it hasn't the right evocative
power every concept album should have, so it gives me another confirmation
of the worrying creative crisis Gary Hughes is going through.
Sadly superflous…a great GH fan is speaking….
