- Che non ci saremmo
trovati di fronte ad un rock progressivo sinfonico dalle ampie ed ariose
divagazioni strumentali lo si poteva già immaginare dalla copertina
di "Watch For the Umbles", il disco d'esordio dei norvegesi Gargamel.
Uno scorcio cittadino apparentemente anonimo reduce da un'abbondante nevicata
con il grigio plumbeo nelle sue differenti tonalità come colore dominante
è l'aspetto visivo del cd che meglio descrive il suo contenuto musicale.
Le iniziali "Tics" e "Strayed Again" non stupiscono
dunque per il loro incedere lento, cadenzato, un po' opprimente e claustrofobico,
che seguono i dettami del prog scandinavo ma anche gli insegnamenti di King
Crimson e VDGG. "Strayed Again" dura dodici minuti ed ha quindi
tutto il tempo di cambiare faccia e di trasformarsi in una jazz-folk jam
che vede protagonisti il violoncello ed il flauto a briglie sciolte in un
percorso sonoro che ha il sapore genuino dell'improvvisazione.
"Below The Water" non mescola le carte in tavola: la ritmica,
ancora una volta cadenzata ed al limite dell'ossessivo, purtroppo scade
nel noioso e ripetitivo, anche perché non è supportata dalla
stessa creatività presente negli altri brani.
Ma il meglio deve ancora arrivare e ce lo riservano i due titoli finali:
"Into The Cold" è il brano più snello e dinamico,
con più ariose ed ampie aperture strumentali ma ancora oscuro e misterioso
nella scelta delle timbriche vocali. Assolutamente stupendi sono i dialoghi
tra il flauto ed il violoncello , così come l'accellerazione centrale
"Hammond-driven" che rende la traccia a tratti trascinante.
Il gran finale spetta ad "Agitated Mind" dall'incipit e dal finale
con echi di kraut-rock (Grobschnitt ??) ed ancora meravigliosamente guidato
dall'Hammond; il puntalissimo flauto, l'hammond ed il Moog alzano sempre
di più la temperatura nello sviluppo del brano avvicinandolo a certi
barocchismi inglesi tipici di Gracious ed Indian Summer.
Oscuro, creativo, genuino ed affascinante: questi sono gli aggettivi utilizzati
sinora e che userei anche per una descrizione sommaria di "Watch For
The Umbles", un disco senza grandi pretese di originalità ma
alquanto godibile. Bravissimi !
- It's enough
to watch the cover of "Watch For the Umbles", the Gargamel debut
album, to realize what kind of music we should expect from this norwegian
band: a town foreshortening after an abundant snowfall with all the grey
tonalities as main colours. Could we expect something different from an
obscure, dark and a little claustrophobic album ?
Absolutely not ! So, don't be amazed to find the first songs "Tics"
and "Strayed Again" with a slow, cadenced and almost doom rhythm,
following the traces of Scandinavian prog but also the ones of King Crimson
and VDGG. "Strayed Again" is a twelve minutes song and has all
the time to change his mood to an exciting jazz-folk jam led by a dialogue
between cello and flute. Great song !!
"Below The Water" doesn't shuffle the cards but unfortunately
it becomes boring and repetitive very soon and it is not overall supported
by the same creativity.
Are you ready for the brightest portion of the album? Well you'll find it
in the last two titles. "Into The Cold" is the most dynamic track,
plenty of wide instrumental parts but still obscure and mysterious in the
vocal lines. Again, the flute and cello dialogues are wonderful as well
as the "Hammond-driven" acceleration in the middle. Even better
is "Agitated Mind" with some kraut-rock and English prog (see
Gracious and Indian Summer) influences.
Obscure, creative, genuine and fascinating: these are the adjectives I've
been using till now and I also could use them to make a sketchy account
of "Watch For The Umbles". Recommended !
