FLAMBOROUGH HEAD - One For The Crow


Conoscevo i Flamborough Head di nome, sapevo che provenivano dall'Olanda ma non avevo mai ascoltato nulla del loro repertorio. Con "One For The Crow" ho rimediato (grazie Edo) !! E’ il loro terzo album ed è chiaramente influenzato dalla musica di Camel e Pink Floyd e dai più recenti esempi di neo progressive come Arena, Mostly Autumn, Quidam e Landmarq.
E’ un album perfetto per chi predilige sonorità romantiche e folk, non c’è mai un momento di particolare allegria e spensieratezza, ma non è un difetto, è solo un modo di intendere la musica che a me personalmente piace molto.
Bellissima "Old Shoes", contraddistinta da un dolcissimo intro di pianoforte e con un costante crescendo di intensità emotiva. Qui mi ricordano molto i Pendragon più sinfonici. La voce di Margriet Boomsma assomiglia a quella di Tracy Hitchings soprattutto in "Nightlife" che infatti sembra estratta dall'ultimo studio album dei Landmarq.
L'album è però prevalentemente strumentale e non va consumato in fretta ma assaporato lentamente in tutta la sua bellezza cercando di cogliere i suoi vari risvolti. "Separate" e "Daydreams" sono autentici gioiellini strumentali, due meravigliosi dipinti dalle tonalità tenui raffiguranti paesaggi bucolici disegnati dal flauto di Margriet, dal pianoforte di Edo Spanninga e dalla chitarra di Eddie Mulder.
"Old Forest" si aggiunge alla lista dei brani che si ispirano senza ritegno ma con gusto allo sfruttatissimo "The Snow Goose" dei Camel. E' vero, le citazioni sono numerose ed in alcuni frangenti talmente evidenti che potrebbero essere usate contro di loro, ma i detrattori dei Flamborough Head troveranno nel sottoscritto anche il loro avvocato difensore: qui la creatività va intesa come capacità di assemblare stili e sonorità già ampiamente sfruttate ma con grande eleganza, senza sconfinare nel patetico e con qualche sprazzo di personalità.
In "Limestone Rock" Eddie Mulder va addirittura ad abbeverarsi alla fonte, perchè dopo il solito flauto che fa da spartiaque, si cimenta in un assolo di chitarra degno dei migliori e più ispirati David Gilmour ed Andrew Latimer.
La vera forza di quest'album risiede nella sua forte propensione alla melodia ed alla qualità dei brani realmente al di sopra della media, per cui gli amanti della commistione tra folk e neo progressive troveranno in "One For The Crow" più di un'ora di paradiso musicale assicurato e sono convinto che aggiungeranno i Flamborough Head alla loro personale lista delle migliori neo progressive band europee accanto a nomi altisonanti e già ben affermati. Io l’ho già fatto, voi cosa aspettate ??
Se adorate tutte le band sopra citate, non fatevelo scappare.


I could start and finish this review by saying you must buy this album but you rightly pretend an explanation of my hurried recommendation. Sorry but when I like an album so much as I liked "One For The Crow" I usually can't resist to start from the end.
Ok, step by step !! Flamborough Head is from the Netherlands and this is their third album. They play an english neo progressive rock with a deep folk touch, so they can be compared to old bands like Genesis, Camel,Pink Floyd and more recently to earlier Marillion, Landmarq, Quidam, Mostly Autumn and so on. Please, take the best of the aforementioned bands, blend slowly and switch on your cd recorder.
The cd starts with two long tracks, a very good summary of what FH's music is about. The folk orientation is guaranteed by a clever use of acoustic guitar and flute, as in "Separate" and "Daydreams", two pastoral pictures painted with soft colours. Otherwise, the neo progressive melodies are guaranteed by E. Mulder's electric guitar and Edo Spanninga's keyboards.
Eddie Mulder is certainly a great fan of David Gilmour and Andrew Latimer (I'm too !!!) and I noticed it listening his fantastic guitar solo in the middle part of "Limestone Rock"
The album is mostly instrumental and the female voice of Margriet Boomsma sometimes reminds me Tracy Hitchings one: please listen to "Nightlife" and you'll admit I'm right.
Everyone who like the mixture of neo progressive rock and folk music will find in "One For The Crow" more than 60 minutes of great music: I liked it very much so I already added Flamborough Head to my personal list of the best european neo prog bands.
