Ad appena
un anno di distanza dall'album d'esordio, i Farpoint danno alla luce il
loro secondogenito dal titolo "Grace". La line-up della band americana
si è arricchita di un nuovo elemento stabile Mike Avins che affianca
il leader kevin Jarvis alla chitarra mentre i contenuti musicali si mantengono
ben sintonizzati su un progressive folk con tematiche pseudo religiose assai
leggero e disimpegnato.
Il brano d'apertura "Into The Night" mi ha lasciato letteralmente
di stucco: una voce filtrata, effetti sonori plastificati ed un ritornello
deprimente danno il via al cd come peggio non era possibile. Se riuscite
a riprendervi dallo shock di un così pessimo inizio, fortunatamente
l'album cambia subito faccia proponendoci, già con "Dawn",
un dolcissimo arpeggio di chitarra seguito dal flauto e dalla voce di Dana
Oxendine e riportando quindi il gruppo capitanato da Kevin Jarvis sui binari
ben oliati del lavoro precedente....."Grace " ha sicuramente beneficiato
di una qualità di registrazione migliore del disco d'esordio, ma
questo non è il solo passo avanti che ho riscontrato: i brani mi
sembrano stilisticamente più omogenei e maturi, con gli angoli più
smussati e con un numero inferiore di cadute di tono. Ma si sente anche
più sostanza sonora, più densità dovuta proprio all'apporto
del nuovo arrivato, le cui parti di chitarra solista contribuiscono ad impreziosire
i brani più movimentati ma anche a creare le giuste atmosfere (vagamente
cameliane) della splendida title-track.
Sia chiaro: non troverete nulla che si avvicini al sensazionale, ma nel
complesso mi sento di consigliare quest'album soprattutto a coloro che mettono
Camel, Mostly Autumn, Pink Floyd e Dio in cima ai loro pensieri.
The american band Farpoint
started its career in music business just last year with a quite inspired
debut album and now the follower is ready. Something has changed: the line
-up sees the new entry of Mike Avins on lead guitars. On the contrary, lyrics
have the same religious themes and also their folky progressive rock is
almost the same.
Althought "Grace" benefits of a better sound quality and a clearer
maturity the cd starts very badly with "Into The Night": "Did
I put the wrong cd in my recorder?" I thought the first time I listened
to it. A filtered voice, sound effects made of plastic and a depressing
refrain (??!!??) really shocked me.
Anyway, let's try to forget "Into the night" and let's consider
the second track "Dawn" as the actual opener of the album: an
acoustic guitar, a gentle flute and the sweet voice of Dana Oxendine let
me realize that I'm really listening to a Farpoint album.
Mike Avins inspired and clean guitar playing rules both the fastest tracks
with good solos and the most atmospheric tracks like the title track, very
close to Camel sound.
Overall it's not an album really sensational but I can recommend it to everyone
putting Camel, Mostly Autumn, Pink Floyd and God at the top of their thoughts.
