- Gli Etcetera
sono un gruppo danese in attività dal 1996 e costituito essenzialmente
da due membri stabili, Franh Carvalho (chitarre, basso, sintetizzatori,
organo Hammond) e Johnnie McLoy (batteria e percussioni di vario tipo) ma
supportati anche dall'intervento di altri musicisti. Il nuovo album "Tales
Of Ardour & Deceit" esce sul mercato dopo un lungo travaglio durato
più di due anni, fra mille difficoltà ed impedimenti.
Il genere musicale proposto dagli Etcetera è essenzialmente un progressive
sinfonico, a tratti robusto, ispirato agli anni settanta ma adattato ai
canoni della scena nordica, come noto caratterizzata dalla presenza di atmosfere
oscure, gotiche e fredde. Questo disco, dal titolo abbastanza emblematico,
è un contenitore di storie epiche, di leggende tratte da un passato
lontano e misterioso. La lunga "The Song Of Marsh Stig" suddivisa
in quattro episodi alterna passaggi con una ritmica trascinata, lenta e
minacciosa, ad altri più pacati e meno ossessionanti. In alcuni frangenti
sembra di ascoltare i primi Landberk.
In "The Lady Of Castela" fa la sua comparsa abbastanza inaspettata
la chitarra portoghese suonata da Carvalho che contribuisce a riscaldare
l'ambiente e ad alzare la temperatura fino a lì ben poco confortevole.
La breve e morbida "Lament" funge da preludio al vero pezzo forte
dell'album, "The Ghost Of Yang, pt.1", l'episodio che più
si avvicina ai dettami del prog sinfonico tradizionale, con un incedere
più dinamico e sinfonico, break strumentali più ariosi ed
una splendida sezione ritmica con il basso molto in evidenza. Solo nel finale
si ricordano della loro provenienza nordica e ripiombano nell'ipnotico e
nel cadenzato (molto efficace, qui, la parte di organo). Ottimo brano !!
Nel complesso si tratta di un lavoro discreto per il livello qualitativo
dei brani, senza alcun evidente cedimento, ed aggiungerei ottimamente eseguito.
Da seguire con attenzione gli eventuali sviluppi….

from Denmark where they started to make music back in 1996. The band consists
of two stable members, Franh Carvalho (guitars, bass, sinthetizers, Hammond
organ) and Johnnie McLoy (drums and percussions) supported by others musicians.
The new album "Tales Of Ardour & Deceit" is finally out after
two long years of troubles and shiftings. They play a fine synphonic progressive
rock influenced by the seventies and adapted to north-european unique scene.
I mean, the sound is really symphonic but also dark, gothic and cold. This
album is a kettle of epic stories and legends taken from so far and mysterious
past times. The long suite "The Song Of Marsh Stig" is divided
in four episodes with a slow and threatening rhythm: sometimes they remind
me the earlier Landberk. In "The Lady Of Castela" you can find
the quite unexpected portuguese guitar played by Carvalho: It's really a
ray of light in the darkness of Etcetera sound. The short and tender "Lament"
is the opening to my favourite track of this album: "The Ghost Of Yang,
pt.1". This track is the closest to the traditional synphonic prog,
it's more dynamic with beautiful instrumental breaks and a wonderful rhythmic
section; only in the last few minutes they remember their nordic origins
and fall again in dark athmospheres.
It's not an unforgettable work, but there are no weak moments and it's played
very well . I will follow their next steps for sure !!
