- Ormai da qualche anno
l'appuntamento con un nuovo album dei Dream Theater si è trasformato
in un occasione per il sottoscritto di commentare la graduale ma inesorabile
trasformazione dello stile della band newyorkese.
Se lo scorso anno "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" aveva comunque
accontentato sia i fans più nostalgici che quelli più avvezzi
alle metamorfosi, presentandoci un doppio cd dai due volti, il nuovo "Train
Of Thought" traccia una netta linea di rottura con il passato. Del
vecchio teatro del sogno è rimasta l'innegabile caratura tecnica
dei suoi componenti, la ancor buona ispirazione con cui scrivono il loro
materiale e, sempre meno frequenti, le tanto care fughe sinfoniche dei tempi
che furono. Per il resto i quattro sembrano ormai decisi a percorrere la
strada che persino i Metallica più recenti hanno ritenuto giusto
abbandonare con la loro ultima fatica: con le dovute proporzioni, in "Train
Of Thought" mi sembra proprio di riascoltare i Metallica dei primi
anni 90 dove la chitarra elettrica in "This Dying Soul" lancia
dei fendenti così taglienti che a confronto Kirk Hemmet sembra un
chitarrista country; lo stesso James LaBrie sempre più sovente rinuncia
deliberatamente alla pulizia della sua voce tirando fuori un'aggressività
repressa che non mi sarei aspettato. "Endless Sacrifice" mi conforta
nelle premesse ma peggiora con il passare dei minuti scadendo in una durezza
un po' troppo fine a se stessa e scarsamente sostenuta da una melodia convincente.
Non sono allergico ai cambiamenti neanche quando questi vanno nella direzione
di una maggior aggressività, ma il cambiamento deve essere sinonimo
di evoluzione che sinceramente in "Train Of Thought" non ho riscontrato.
Oltre alla discreta apertura di "As I Am", nel disco c'è
un unico e benaugurante spiraglio di luce rappresentato da "Stream
Of Consciousness", un brano che mostra meno i muscoli e più
il cervello, una decina di minuti completamente strumentali, strabordanti
di ottime idee e linee melodiche superlative. Troppo poco per i miei gusti….

few years, the rendezvous with a new Dream Theater album had been a chance
for me to make a comment on their both slowly and inexorable changing of
music style. If the last year, the double album "Six degrees Of Inner
Turbulence" had satisfied both the most nostalgic and modern fans,
the new effort "Train Of Thought" draws a breaking-line with the
shining past. I mean, the incredible skillness of the four musicians, the
good inspiration which they write their own stuff with and the more and
more rare symphonic attitudes are always the same; unfortunately, now they
prefer to play music that not even Metallica play anymore. Yes, in "Train
Of Thought" they really reminded me Metallica of the early nineties
with similar heavy guitar riffs and raw vocals. "Endless Sacrifice"
starts in a positive way but lose its way very soon. Please don't misunderstand
me, I appreciate any kind of changes but only if they mean evolution and
progression. I only found a single ray of light in "Stream Of Consciousness",
such a beautidul track with less muscles and more brain, ten instrumental
minutes full of brilliant ideas and wonderful melodic lines. I wanted more
from Dream Theater!!!
