- Non c'è più
alcun dubbio: il successo, anche commerciale, dei Radiohead e dei Porcupine
Tree insieme alla sempre più frequente riscoperta del rock psichedelico
e dello space-rock contaminato con l'hard rock ha fatto si che in Inghilterra
esplodesse una vera e propria invasione di discepoli di questo genere. A
caso mi vengono in mente i Root, i Blue Drift ed i Pineapple Thief ai quali
si affiancano ora questi Day Shift, x ragazzi provenienti dal sud dell'Inghilterra.
Tuttavia, rispetto ai gruppi citati, i Day Shift sono più aggressivi
e spigolosi: le sferzate chitarristiche in "The Happy Elephant"
ed in "The Alternative Magpie" (questa però dal ritmo più
cadenzato) sono incalzanti e creano un muro sonoro resistente accompagnato
però da una melodia vocale fluida e melodica. Purtoppo la voce di
Bob Leek è tutt'altro che irresistibile, non brillando particolarmente
sia per timbro che per intonazione ed è anche abbastanza noiosa e
poco versatile. Al contrario è ottima la prestazione dell'ospite
Archie alle percussioni, per la verità non del tutto inaspettata
perché abbiamo già avuto modo di apprezzarlo nei Blue Drift
e nei Morrigan.
La musica è dunque molto robusta, dinamica e condita di effetti sonori
elettronici che rendono l'atmosfera molto spaziale; anche in questo caso
c'è da evidenziare la presenza di un "ma" o un "però"
di troppo poiché la qualità dei brani non riesce quasi mai
ad elevarsi a livelli sufficientemente elevati. E ci si mette pure la qualità
della registrazione non propriamente eccelsa, troppo impastata e poco brillante.
Al contrario impressiona piacevolmente il finale di lavoro con "The
Unwashed Platypus" dove per la prima volta vengono lasciate da parte
le spigolosità in favore di un suono più raffinato e vicino
allo space-rock più atmosferico. E' il brano più lungo ed
anche il più riuscito anche perché il chitarrista Nick Beere
tira fuori tutto il David Gilmour che alberga in lui.
Nel complesso dunque, "Imaginary Menagerie" è un esordio
da rimandare a settembre, con più difetti che pregi: io comincerei
innanzitutto a lavorare su una migliore qualità sonora per dare al
prossimo lavoro una cornice dignitosa dal quale emergano, speriamo, idee
più brillanti.
- No one can ignore the
fact that the psychedelic/space rock scene is growing more and more in Great
Britain under the flag of Radiohead and Porcupine Tree. I'm talking about
bands like Root, Blue Drift, Pineapple Thief but also about these guys from
southern England who joined together in 2004.
As a matter of fact, "Imaginary Managerie", Day Shift's debut
album shows a more aggressive and metal vein than the bands mentioned before:
the wall of sound built by the guitar inside "The Happy Elephant"
and "The Alternative Magpie" is so hard, though the vocals themes
are quite soft and melodic. Everything is accompanied by a very spacey keyboards
and sound effects.
I must say there are more weak points than strong in this album: the songwriting
is not always inspired and the recording is quite poor in my opinion.
My favourite track is "The Unwashed Platypus" where the band forgets
the hard-edged sounds for a while, showing more refined and spacey atmospheres;
besides Nick Beere plays his guitar in David Gilmour vein here.
I think Day Shift should work on a better recording trying, in the meantime,
to find better ideas to put in the next album. I would start just from the
final and best track of the album.
