- Del tutto inatteso
e senza pompose annunciazioni, esce il disco omonimo d'esordio dei Combination
Head per la S.A.M. records. Questo gruppo inglese è composto da musicisti
ormai navigati, con numerose ed assai variegate esperienze sulle spalle:
Paul Birchall alle tastiere (già produttore di M-People, Gary Boyle,
The Corr's, Jim Diamond e molti altri), Keith Ashcroft al basso ed alla
chitarra e, udite udite, Paul Burgess alle percussioni (Camel, 10CC, Jethro
Tull, Chris Farlowe). In realtà Burgess suona la batteria solo in
quattro delle otto composizioni accreditate nel cd.
Il disco propone una miscela fresca e decisamente ben suonata di rock progressivo
strumentale e di fusion con i temi di tastiere in gran evidenza che fanno
da traino in tutte le otto tracce. Ma ciò non sorprende affatto,
poiché il disco è stato composto interamente da Birchall.
Splendida l'apertura di "Clover Rd", divisa in tre parti: un'introduzione
soffusa di pianoforte sfocia poi in una sequenza dinamica, ariosa e sinfonica
(vagamente alla Camel mark 2) con ottimi fraseggi di tastiere e chitarra.
Il brano si chiude ancora meglio con un rallentamento del ritmo ed una temperatura
resa altissima dalle partiture soul/blues dell'accoppiata Birchall/Ashcroft.

La title-track è l'episodio più movimentato e per certi versi
spigoloso, caratterizzato da un muro di tastiere granitico su cui Ashcroft
ricama degli assoli di chitarra al fulmicotone.
Ci pensa poi la leggiadria del pianoforte di "Blue Waters" a riportare
la calma, mentre "The Bonk" è pura rock-fusion molto ritmata
e scoppiettante con alcune reminiscenze del Jeff Beck anni novanta.
Potrei dilungarmi nella descrizione degli altri brani ma ritengo che l'essenza
della proposta dei CH sia già ampiamente emersa; un album sempre
in bilico tra un rock fusion di indubbio gusto ed un rock progressivo sinfonico
orecchiabile racchiuso soprattuto nelle due "Clover Rb" (traccia
1 e 6). Interessante e godibile.
- The eponymous Combination
Head debut cd comes out totally unexpected and without pompous announcements
for S.A.M. records. This british band basically consists of three high-experienced
musicians: Paul Birchall on keyboards (also producer of M-People, Gary Boyle,
The Corr's, Jim Diamond and many others), Keith Ashcroft on bass and guitars,
Paul Burgess on drums (Camel, 10CC, Jethro Tull, Chris Farlowe). As a matter
of fact Burgess plays drums only in 4 tracks out of eight.
The band offers a clean blend of symphonic rock and fusion with keyboards
as leading instrument throughout the album; actually I'm not so surprised
since all the tracks were written by Paul Birchall.
The most interesting tracks are certainly the two "Clover Rb"
(track 1 and 6) where the prog vein is more emphasized: a mellow piano introduction,
followed by the symphonic and dynamic dialogues between keyboards and guitar.
Finally Birchall and Ashcroft also put some soul/blues themes to heat up
the track..
The rest of the stuff is sometimes harder with rough-edge guitar solos (the
title-track), sometimes quiet and atmospheric ("Blue Waters")
and funny rock-fusion ("The Bonk").
Well, the band was able to create a strong debut album, widely recommended
to the instrumental symphonic rock fans. …And they're growing up,
more and more.
