- Colin Bass, ovvero
le sopracciglia più folte del prog. Un cognome, ma anche lo strumento
suonato da Colin fin dai tempi in cui entrò a far parte dei Camel.
Adesso siamo nel 2003 ed è ancora lì, fedele compagno di Andrew
Latimer e co-responsabile di una leggenda progressiva lungi dall'esaurirsi
tanto in fretta.
Ma non è tutto: qualche anno fa fonda la Kartini e da alle stampe
il suo primo album solista "An Outcast of the Island" che solo
in parte prende le distanze dal Camel sound.
"In The Meantime" è il secondo capitolo della sua avventura
solista dopo un paio di dischi dal vivo e qui le distanze dai Camel e dal
prog in generale si allungano ulteriormente, non solo perché Latimer
non figura nei crediti degli ospiti. Per esempio nell'iniziale "Dissident
Song" (ispirata alla tristemente famosa protesta di piazza Tiananmen)
così come nella intensissima "So Hard To Say Goodbye" troverete
dosi massiccie di country folk a stelle e striscie e qualche tocco di blues
sulla scia di artisti come Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Nail et similia,
ma avrete anche modo di sentire gli echi non troppo lontani dei Dire Straits
tardi anni 80 di "Slow Train Blues"
I prog fans dalla mente aperta non devono comunque preoccuparsi: pur essendo,
e come tale verrà ricordato, un disco di rock classico semplice e
molto radiofonico, gli arrangiamenti fini e molto curati contengono, in
modo più o meno celato, il Dna progressivo di un artista sensibile
e molto evoluto. Bastano una manciata di ascolti per avere un quadro sufficientemente
chiaro di come Colin intenda il suo personale universo sonoro al di fuori
dei Camel, un mondo cioè un po' più disimpegnato e nel quale
ricercare magari un successo commerciale più vasto e remunerativo.
Il risultato finale comunque non delude, anzi c'è di che rallegrarsi.

the Camel bass player. Now it's 2003 and he's still there, Andy Latimer's
faithful mate of a shining prog legend.
A couple of years ago he founded Kartini music and published " An Outcast
of the Island" quite close to Camel stuff. After some live albums now
it's the time of "In The Meantime" which keep Camel's distance
much more than its predecessor. In "Dissident song" (inspired
by the sadly famous Tiananmen Square protest) and in the wonderful "So
Hard To Say Goodbye" you'll find deep traces of US country folk and
blues in the vein of artists like Tome Petty, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Nail
and similar.
I think prog and Camel fans (open-minded) shouldn't be worried about it:
although "In The Meantime" will be certainly recalled as a classic
and airplay rock album, the first listening is enough to find the fine arrangements
of a prog Dna like Colin's one.
I'm one of the greatest Camel fans around the world, but I liked this album
not only for this reason. Trust of me.
