- I Circles End arrivano
dalla Norvegia e si sono formati nella metà degli anni novanta, realizzando
il loro debutto intitolato "In Dialogue With The Moon" nel 2001.
Il nuovo disco di questi sei ragazzi è l'ulteriore conferma del primato
(a questo punto dell'anno fuori discussione) che i gruppi scandinavi hanno
saputo conquistarsi nel corso del 2004 ed "Hang On To That Kite"
si è immediatamente ritagliato uno spazio privilegiato all'interno
della mia classifica annuale. E' un disco fresco e brillante che sa fondere
sapientemente sonorità che spaziano dal prog sinfonico anni settanta
al rock melodico più accessibile, dal jazz al moderno post-rock.
Il tutto presentato con il tipico abito nordico dalla tinta grigio tenue.
Il brano di apertura, "Echoes", è in grado da solo di inglobare
tutti questi elementi: un'apertura molto sinfonica seguita dalla chitarra
distorta di Trond Lindgren che rievoca vagamente i fantasmi dei Porcupine
Tree. La calda voce di Karl Jacobsen ha un timbro vagamente sudista mentre
Jon Olsen interviene con un pregiatissimo assolo di sassofono. "Tiny
Lights" è un breve spaccato prog-jazz-fusion mentre da "Red
Worlds" fuoriesce l'anima più melodica del gruppo, che si manifesta
con il classico appeal commerciale di un potenziale singolo ed è
a mio parere accostabile ai Rem più delicati e acustici. "At
Shore" è assolutamente meravigliosa, delicata e rilassante.
Impressiona soprattutto la continuità con cui i Circles End riescono
a trasmettere emozioni variopinte, proponendo otto brani tutti efficaci
e brillanti su nove: un rullino di marcia di tutto rispetto appena lievemente
penalizzato da "Charlie" che non sembra avere il cosiddetto "piglio"
giusto. Merita una citazione anche la conclusiva "The Dogfather Has
Entered the Lift" che sa fondere magistralmente ritmiche latino-americane
e partiture jazz-fusion.
Insomma, "Hang On To that Kite" è stato il mio primo approccio
con il gruppo norvegese e la mia infatuazione è stata praticamente
immediata. Aspettando il nuovo (ed attesissimo) album, credo che renderò
più dolce l'attesa procurandomi "In Dialogue With The Moon"….

- Circles End is a six-piece
from Norway existing since mid-nineties. They have already released a debut
album called "In Dialogue With The Moon" back in 2001. Their second
and new album "Hang On To That Kite" is the further confirmation
of the absolute supremacy conquered by scandinavian bands in 2004. It's
really a brilliant and fresh work wisely blending different sounds and moods:
I found traces of old symphonic prog, melodic rock, jazz and "post-rock".
Everything is showed with a nordic pale-grey dress.
The opener "Echoes" contains all the above mentioned sounds: a
shining symphonic opening followed by the Trond Lindgren quite distorted
guitar (close to Porcupine Tree stuff). Then Karl Jacobsen's warm voice
comes out with its looking like southern-rock tone. Finally, the saxophone,
played by the guest Jon Olsen, gives the refined touch.
After a so wonderful opening, the cd goes on keeping the same level, more
or less: "Tiny Lights" is prog-jazz-fusion break; "Red Worlds"
shows the most melodic side of their music, the chorus has a strong commercial
appeal and overall this song reminds me the acoustuc side of Rem. Then,
both "At Shore" and "The Dogfather Has Entered the Lift"
are really beautiful tracks with mellow melodies and so skilled executions.
This cd has been my first taste of Circles End music and I must say I immediately
fell in love with it. While waiting for the new album I will try to dialogue
with the moon ...... Recommended !!
