di chi pensa che dall'Italia non possano uscire dischi super-professionali,
graficamente ben presentati e quindi facilmente esportabili all'estero.
I romani Cheope ci sono riusciti con il loro disco d'esordio "Downloadideas"
che sul retro-copertina presenta l'eloquente scritta "mastered by George
Marino". E quanti ricordi evoca… !!
Peccato, tuttavia, che questo non sia sufficiente a dare credito ad un gruppo
che si autodefinisce progressive nu-metal con l'ambizione di aver portato
freschezza ed originalità, che ha generato più di un'aspettativa
nel sottoscritto e che poi scopro essere molto semplicemente metal e neanche
dei più brillanti.
Per apprezzare i Cheope devono piacervi una voce potente e solo moderatamente
"growl" ed un substrato musicale essenzialmente metal vicino alla
produzione dei vari Pantera, Metallica e Pain Of Salvation; anzi è
proprio con gli svedesi appena citati che noto il comune denominatore stilistico
più calzante.
Insomma, in "Downloadideas" non ho trovato quello a cui i Cheope
mi avevano preparato: ma come sono le 14 canzoni che lo compongono ? Per
rendere l'idea, ho apprezzato solo "Again", "Risen"
e soprattutto "On Air", dove i Cheope osano veramente nell'andare
fuori da un seminato metal un po' scialbo e riciclato e dove quindi ottengono
a mio parere i risultati espressivi migliori. Sara' forse l'approccio più
riflessivo e più ragionato di questi tre brani, sarà il fatto
che in ambito metal io sia diventato molto esigente ma tutto il resto del
disco mi sembra molto ben suonato finché volete ma scialbo, piatto
e riscaldato: di fronte a brani come "Colors" (quante volte ho
già sentito quel ritornello?) e "What D'U Want" , solo
per citarne un paio, rimango insensibile ed anche un po' annoiato.
Fa senz'altro piacere che sia italiana la firma di uno dei dischi più
professionali e curati degli ultimi anni, ma è un po' poco per elevarlo
al di sopra della sufficienza e consigliarne l'ascolto.

is Progressive Nu-Metal. I think the term "progressive" is not
right and proper. Pantera, Metallica and Pain Of Salvation are the closest
relatives, in my opinion. |
| Apart from the fine
recording (you can read the writing "Mastered by George Marino"
on the back-cover) and a professional cover-art, I found very few decisive
points of interest, basically placed inside the only three tracks I liked:
It's maybe the more reflective approach to music or it's the greater tendency
to progress and to find better solutions. |
| It lacks of "ideas",
that seem to be "downloaded" from a metal-cliches website. How
many times I've already heard the "Colors" chorus ? It's only
one example to describe an overall boring and useless album. Too bad,
because these guys play so well. |
| In spite of those
who think that it's impossible to find an italian professional heavy metal
album, "Downloadideas" comes up to these qualifications, but
it's not enough to consider it a good product. I can only recommend it
to the strict heavy metal fans… and not so exacting ! |
