- La Progress records
presenta al mondo progressivo questa nuova band svedese costituita da Stefan
Damicolas (voce e chitarra), Max Bergman (percussioni), Gurra Maxen (basso
e tastiere) e Peter Dahlstrom (voce, basso e tastiere).
I Brother Ape si disimpegnano molto bene nel proporci un rock sinfonico
abbastanza annacquato ma non privo di spunti di grande interesse. Il gruppo
svedese è la dimostrazione di come sia possibile fondere melodie
vocali leggere e radiofoniche con un substrato strumentale talvolta pop
ma più spesso dall' elevato contenuto tecnico andando così
incontro ai gusti musicali di una platea vasta ed eterogenea.
Ignoro se questa sia un'intelligente scelta commerciale o coincida esattamente
con l'essenza dei Brother Ape, in ogni caso il risultato si attesta su livelli
ottimi e più o meno tutti i brani mostrano questa fisionomia: l'iniziale
"The Jerk" è sostenuta da un riff di chitarra avvolgente
ma graffiante e da un drunmming vario; segue, più o meno sullo stesso
stile, la splendida "I Freak Out", forte di una sezione strumentale
di gran classe intersecata da efficaci momenti solistici di chitarra.
Poi troviamo "Waiting For The Sandman", un brano soffice ed edulcorato
da un ritornello facile facile cantato alla Christopher Cross da Peter Dahlström.
Ma potrei citare anche "Clockworks" nel novero dei brani migliori
di un disco che ha veramente pochissimi cedimenti di qualità. La
stessa "Railaways" è molto attraente e radiofonica, ma
rischia di tramutarsi in una passeggera avventura amorosa estiva, perché
qui il pop di atmosfera sovrasta qualsisasi velleità strumentale.
Gli altri episodi dove però il pop prevale sul resto sono "This
Hour", una ballata acustica del tutto anonima e l'insulsa "Farewell
Song".
Infine, in "Unaccomplished" e nella conclusiva title-track si
assiste per la prima volta ad una sterzata decisa verso territori prog sinfonici
(vagamente alla Saga) grazie ad un ispiratissimo intreccio di chitarra e
tastiere che si sostengono a vicenda.
Un disco bello e gradevole lungo quasi tutta la sua durata proprio perchè
in grado di offrire melodie accattivanti, intelligenti ma anche divagazioni
strumentali ben più elaborate che nobilitano la proposta artistica
dei Brother Ape.

of Progress records label is a swedish band called Brother Ape featuring
Stefan Damicolas (vocals/guitar), Max Bergman (drums), Gurra Maxen (bass/keyboards)
and Peter Dahlstrom (vocals/bass/keyboards).
These guys are the living proof that easy vocal lines, an Aor/pop attitude
and clever (and sometimes quite complex) symphonic themes are not impossibile
to put together. I don't know if these guys gathered around a table making
a commercial plan before writing the stuff, but I do know the result is
absolutely convincing and able to satisfy a wide audience, from the most
exacting to the most superficial listener.
There's really a lot of interesting stuff here: "The Jerk", "I
Freak Out" and "Clockworks" are commercial but not easy songs
due to a beautiful guitar and drums work. The most commercial tunes are
"Waiting For The Sandman" with a a chorus sung by Peter Dahlström
in the vein of Cristopher Cross; then "Railaways" is attractive
like a beautiful woman but its poppy melody maybe won't last more than a
summer love affair.
"This Hour" and "Farewell Song" are not so exciting
acoustic ballads and they're the only weakest moments of the whole album.
Finally, "Unaccomplished" and the title-track will appeal all
the symphonic prog fans, being more complex and so close to Saga and Rush
stuff.
Well, "On The Other Side" is so much a pleasant work that I have
listened many times in the last weeks. I think you'll do the same if you
buy it. Recommended.
