- At War With Self è
un nuovo progetto artistico a formazione triangolare che vede coinvolti
Glenn Snelwar (chitarra, mandolino e tastiere), Michael Manring (basso)
e l'ex batterista di Warlord e Fates Warning, Mark Zonder.
Con mia grande sorpresa (perché difficilmente mi appassiono delle
formazioni triangolari e strumentali) "Torn Between Dimensions"
è un album capace di regalare forti emozioni, superiori anche a quelle
provate ascoltando i Gordian Knot con i quali, lo ricordiamo, Glenn Snelwar
aveva collaborato.
E' un album interamente strumentale che sa coniugare molto bene virtuosismo
, complessità delle trame ed estrema godibilità. E' un ambizioso
viaggio sonoro nei meandri di una dimensione surreale ed indefinita, una
sapiente rappresentazione musicale di un'allucinazione che ti costringe
all'ascolto per tutta la sua durata grazie ad una tensione emotiva sempre
al massimo e la quasi totale assenza di cedimenti di qualità.
Qualsiasi rigida definizione per descrivere questo disco risulterebbe forse
uno sterile esercizio critico: pur non osando mai nella direzione di una
spesso poco digeribile sperimentazione sonora, ha il grande merito di ricercare
costantemente la fusione di stili e di atmosfere molto diverse tra loro.
Infatti Jazz, fusion, progressive metal e post-rock sembrano qui convivere
con estrema naturalezza.
Trovo altrettanto difficile estrarre qualche episodio particolare da un
disco che brilla per la sua straordinaria omogenità e continuità
di rendimento, ma segnalo comunque le due parti di "A Gap In The Stream
Of Mind" (a mio parere il vero cuore pulsante del disco), le splendide
trame acustiche di "Coming Home" ed il grande potere ipnotico
di "The Event Horizon".
Un disco che considero una delle prime graditissime sorprese di questo inizio
di 2005, destinato a diventare un autentico must per gli appassionati dei
Gordian Knot, dei Fates Warning di "Perfect Symmetry" e dei Kopecky,
ma che ammalierà anche chi è poco avvezzo alle cervellotiche
evoluzioni strumentali di una formazione triangolare, per di più
americana !!

a new music project from U.s.a. where three well-known musicians are involved:
Glenn Snelwar (guitar, mandolin and keys), Michael Manring (bass) and the
Warlord/Fates Warning ex-drummer Mark Zonder.
Generally I've never been so fond of american instrumental progressive rock
where both skillness and overall complexity usually come first of all the
rest.
So when I listened to "Torn Between Dimensions" I couldn't believe
my ears because it has a magnetic power to gather around itself skilled
executions, quite complex themes and deep enjoyment. In a few words this
is the triumph of a certain kind of instrumental and bizarre progressive
rock.
It's an ambitious music trip through the meanders of an unreal and indefinite
dimension, maybe the description of an hallucinatory experience where the
tension is so high that the listener is compelled to live it in its entirety.
Jazz, Fusion, progressive metal and modern post rock seem to live together
here and I'm in trouble to pick up the best tracks: I think the two parts
of "A Gap In The Stream Of Mind" are the true beating heart of
the work but I also recommend a deepened listening of "Coming Home"
and "The Event Horizon".
A great release and definitely one of the best of 2005, especially for fans
of Gordian Knot, Fates Warning ("Perfect Symmetry" period) and
Kopecky.
