Il processo
evolutivo che ha trasformato gli Arena da band neo-progressive dei primi
2 album in fulgido esempio di progressive metal melodico sembra ormai essersi
completato.
"Contagion" chiude definitivamente l'epoca in cui primi Marillion
e Pink Floyd rappresentavano i principali punti di riferimento per la band
di Clive Nolan e Mick Pointer e ne apre un'altra dopo che l'interlocutorio
"Immortal" ne aveva anticipato gli intenti.
Questo nuovo concept-cd, racchiuso in una bellissima confezione coloratissima
ed apribile in tre parti, inizia splendidamente con "Witch Hunt"
che è seriamente candidata a togliere a "Crack In The Ice"
lo scettro di miglior brano di apertura di un disco degli Arena. Un ritmo
pesante e minaccioso, quasi militaresco (visti i tempi che corrono), detta
i tempi di un brano caratterizzato da un ritornello molto efficace e cantato
magistralmente da Rob Sowden.
Ma in realtà già con la successiva "Painted Man"
(che mi ricorda molto "The Butterfly Man" e non solo nel titolo)
rispunta il sinfonismo delle fughe tastieristiche di Nolan che ripristina
le giuste distanze tra il prog-metal più convenzionale ed il marchio
Arena. Il passato, cioè, non è stato dimenticato ed a più
riprese se ne trova traccia, come nella brevissima "Bitter Harvest"
e nello splendido finale dell'album affidato a "Cutting The Cards"
ed "Ascension", quasi convincendomi che le cose in fondo non sono
poi così tanto cambiate. Se "Immortal" mi era piaciuto
ma non mi aveva entusiasmato, "Contagion" mi da la piacevole sensazione
di un lavoro più completo, a tratti molto eccitante e ricco di contenuti.
E' strutturalmente molto più elaborato, più progressivo insomma;
ciascun brano brilla di luce propria e contemporaneamente si incastra in
un'amalgama ben congegnata.
"The Visitor" rimane l'ultimo disco degli Arena ad avermi trasmesso
emozioni vere e profonde, ma vi invito a dedicare numerosi ascolti a "Contagion",
certo che troverete di che soddisfare la vostra fame progressiva. E gli
Arena in questo sono veri campioni ….
Arena started his musical
process as a clone of early Marillion (Pointer had to go on what his departure
from Fish and company had stopped) and latest Pink Floyd (the actual Clive
nolan Passion). After three wonderful albums, the band started a changing
process that brought them towards melodic progressive metal lands. "Immortal"
and this new album "Contagion" are the living proof.
"Contagion" is a well done concept album starting with the beautiful
"Witch Hunt", a really strong track with a killer chorus by Rob
Sowden, that is certainly one of the best Arena opening track together with
"Crack In The Ice".
The follower "Painted Man", very close to "The Butterfly
Man" (not only for the title), "Bitter Harvest", "Cutting
The Cards" and "Ascension" show everybody they never forgot
their past releases: Nolan keys and Mitchell guitar are very proggy and
really synphonic, clearly restoring the differences between prog-metal and
Arena style.
If I had liked "Immortal" not so much as "The Visitor",
this new work sounds almost the same to me but I must admit it's more complete,
more complex, more progressive.
I'm sure each Arena fan will like it very much. Recommended !! Couldn't
it be ???
