Ho atteso con trepidazione l'uscita di questo
nuovo lavoro degli Act, principalmente nella speranza che la band svedese
confermasse quanto di buono era emerso dai primi due dischi. Le mie aspettative
non sono affatto andate deluse: "The Last Epic" mi ha confermato
con decisione che gli Act sono il gruppo di prog-metal melodico più
sofisticato ed intelligente attualmente in circolazione, un'affermazione
che può apparire forte ed impegnativa ma ben suffragata da tre album
di grande spessore artistico. Degli Act adoro la sapienza ed il gusto con
i quali sanno mischiare solide basi di chitarre (abilmente congegnate da
Ola Andersson), cambi di tempo fluidi ed ariosi ed una spiccata melodicità
quasi Pop/Aor: ne vien fuori un incrocio ben equilibrato tra Dream Theater,
Queen e Robby Valentine.
Gli Act sanno cioè essere molto robusti (anche se mai stupidamente
aggressivi) come nell'opener "Wailings From A Building" ma sempre
con una componente melodica prevalente, testimoniata dalla bellissima "Torn
By A Phase". Il loro lato più aggrazziato e dolce si concretizza
nelle note "Ted's Ballad", forse la mia ballad preferita in questo
momento, cantata divinamente da Herman Saming. Come se non bastasse, in
questo fine tessuto musicale gli Act riescono addirittura ad inserire ritmi
reggae ed altre contaminazioni senza che risultino mai fuori luogo.
Insomma questa è fantasia, questa è classe oltreché
capacità di gestire un successo che è facile prevedere in
un crescendo continuo. Questo è soprattutto ( e non mi stancherò
mai di sottolinearlo) un disco di prog-metal concepito ed eseguito con grande
intelligenza: i Pain Of Salvation, Vandenplas e compagnia sono sempre più
avvisati. Consigliato !!
I was waiting
for a new Act album with unpatience and my expectations have been satisfied:
"The Last Epic" is the third demonstration that this band from
Sweden is the most clever and sophisticated european prog-metal "act".
Why ? First of all because few bands can count on the fine guitar of Ola
Andersson and the wonderful voice of Herman Saming; then because Act were
always able to blend Dream Theater prog with Queen eccentricity and Robby
Valentine poppy approach. I mean, they can be so hard as in the opener "Wailings
From A Building", hard and really melodic at the same time (in the
wonderful "Torn By A Phase") and more quiet ("Ted's Ballads"
is my favourite ballad at the moment). That's fantasy, high class, that's
the most clever approach to progressive metal, above all. Pain Of Salvation,
Vandenplas and similar colleagues are more and more warned. Recommended
!!!!
