Marillion,
Twelfth Night and Iq were the first bands to make the first steps for
the rebirth of progressive rock in Great Britain, then called neo-prog.
Scottish Abel Ganz (from Glasgow) can be considered as a minor expression
of that wonderful scene.
" Gratuitous Flash", their debut album released in 1980 as a
demotape, received good reviews and a positive feedback from fans. The
album was reprinted and officially released 3 years after with the new
entry of Alan Reed on vocals.
Great album, no doubt. It starts with one the best neo-prog songs of all
times "Little By Little" where Hew Montgomery keys and Malky
McNiven guitar create very synphonic and melodic architectures. It's very
hard for me to find any weak tracks in this album: everything is so perfect
and exciting. The soft and romantic "Kean on the Job" (very
floydish in some parts of it) and the final suite "The Dead Zone"
(every prog albums must have its suite).
If you loved Genesis, Marillion, Pallas and all "those" bands
of the first eighties till death, you must have this wonderful album.
Don't miss it !!!
